During an informal conversation between Owensboro High School drama teacher Carolyn Greer and Karen Brooks, the administrative secretary, about the movie “Steel Magnolias,” Brooks suggested a teacher production of it.

“And from there, the ball started rolling,” Greer said.

OHS teachers will be holding a Reader’s Theatre performance of “Steel Magnolias” next Thursday night at 6 p.m. at OHS. This will be a fundraiser for the Rose Curtain Players, OHS’s theatre program.

“As with normal reader’s theatre, the six performers will be seated with their scripts in front of them. There is no set or stage movement, but with a story like ‘Steel Magnolias,’ you don’t need it,” Greer said.

Six OHS faculty members will play the parts and Greer said they are “dynamic” and she is thankful for their support of the Rose Curtain Players.

Karen Brooks stars as Truvy, Michelle Calhoun as M’Lynn, Beth Ewing as Shelby, Libby Johnson as Annelle, Christy Smith as Claire and Lori Thurman as Ouiser.

“What started as a funny morning chit chat had turned into us actually doing this Reader’s Theatre event,” Johnson said.

Johnson also said that it is equal parts fun and and scary and she isn’t sure she will be able to keep a straight face, based on the rehearsals they have done.

Tickets can be reserved at [email protected]. Tickets are $5 for all OPS employees and students and $8 for the public.
