It was a successful night for the local schools as both Owensboro Catholic and Hancock County tennis swept their opponents.
Hancock County Vs. Cloverport
Returning to action, Hancock County’s boys team beat Cloverport 5-0, while the Lady Hornets won 3-2. There was only one match on the boys’ side with Payne Pence beating Hunter Bradley 8-5. On the girls’ side, Ruchi Patel beat Emma Snyder. The rest of the wins for both teams came by forfeits.
“It was great to get back on the court,” Hancock County head coach Dan Hopkins said. “Cloverport is trying to build its program. I was proud of Payne for getting the win as the number one, and we will need more of that from him. We sat our best girls out and almost lost, but a comeback by Ruchi at number one saved us. All three of their girls were very competitive. This was the girls’ third win, which surpasses last year’s total, and tomorrow we play Meade County, so I am hopeful we can play well.”
Owensboro Catholic Vs. Madisonville North Hopkins
It was a dominant performance from Owensboro Catholic as both the boys’ and girls’ teams beat Madisonville North Hopkins 8-1. The Aces Jack Haines, Ollie Haines, Joseph Merchant, Houston Danzer, and John Wathen all won their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Danzer and Merchant and Ben Haines and Henry Haines both won.
For the Lady Aces, Ella Cason, Madison Clark, Lexie Moyers, Meredith Traylor, Mary Edge, and Gabi Moyers all won their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Traylor and Sophia Merchant and Reagan Hamilton and Paige Hamilton both won.
“I was very proud of both of our teams,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Noel Clayton said. “We played well against two very good Madison North Hopkins teams. I would think both teams are favorites to win their region.”
