The Red Devils beat Apollo in an important 9th district match, while Daviess County won on the road. In other action, Hancock County dropped a tight one to Meade County.

Owensboro 8, Apollo 1

Eli Hamton went 3-4 with a homer and three RBIs in the Red Devils’ 8-1 win over Apollo. Brady Banjamin and Blake Kimbrell both drove in a pair of runs, while Evan Hampton went 2-3.

“Offensively, we approached at bats the way we strive to daily – attack strikes, confident swings, and fight like heck to pass the bat to the next guy,” Owensboro head coach Jake Fiorella said. “After a dud last night, it was great to see the energy, effort and focus from our team top to bottom. It’s so tough to win in this district, so to play at that level against a high quality opponent is promising.”

Cayden Ray was the starting pitcher, allowing one earned run over six innings, striking out seven. Will Hume pitched a perfect seven inning, striking out two.

“I thought our guys competed really well from the jump. Cayden Ray was terrific to start on the mound, and Will Hume was huge for us in relief. I’m really proud,” Fiorella said.” We’re going to keep working, together, to continue progressing collectively & push to prepare our guys to play at a high level come postseason time.”

For the Eagles, Ty Lillpop drove in the team’s lone run, while Jagger Pate, Gunnar Hendricks, Jackson Carder, and Ryleigh Logan all had hits. Carter Kimmel was the starting pitcher, allowing three earned runs over four innings, while Isaac James and Carder both pitched out of the bullpen.

That OHS team will be as hard to beat as anyone in the state if they can give a pitcher like Ray a lead like they did,” Apollo head coach Brandon Dennis said. “They attacked as in the first inning and put us in a really tough spot for the rest of the night. Credit to them for their performance in all aspects of the game.”

Daviess County 6, Grayson County 2

Logan Mewes recorded three hits, and Mason Russelburg drove in a pair in the Panthers’ 6-2 win over Grayson County. Brody Brubaker finished 2-3, while Sean Page also drove in a run. Brodie Tucker started on the mound, giving up two unearned runs over four innings, while Weston Lawrence threw three shutout innings out of the bullpen.

“Tucker threw well and competed when we didn’t make some plays early,” Daviess County head coach Austin Clay said. “Cameron Rickard made some great plays in right field that save some runs for us. We are starting to swing the bats well.”

Meade County 4, Hancock County 3

Louden Flaherty threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out seven in the Hornets’ 4-3 loss to Meade County. Jack Roberts and Carson Clark both drove in runs, while Jacob Shultz finished 1-3 and scored twice.
