Competing at the site one swimming and diving first round of the state tournament over the weekend, Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro, and Owensboro Catholic all held their own.
The Lady Panthers finished first in the 200 freestyle relay and second in the 200-medley relay – advancing to the state finals for both. Both relay teams include Alaina Mason, Ryleigh Bevil, Ellie Girten, and Grace Bullock.
On the individual side, Bevil advanced to the state finals after finishing first in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. She will be joined by Girten who finished second in 100 freestyle and third in 50 freestyle.
Mason finished eighth in the 100 butterfly and 11th in 100 backstroke, while Bullock placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke.
On the boys’ side, their 200 freestyle relay finished eighth and their 400 freestyle relay team placed 10th. Caleb Sosh finished 15th in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and Mack Burton placed 13th in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Caden Embry was 15th in the 100 butterfly.
Owensboro Catholic’s boys’ 200 medley relay team of Miller Bowman, Vince Coyne, Parker Hayden, ZJ McDole, and Calvin Padgett (alternate) advanced to the state finals. Bowman also advanced in both the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while his sister Bellah Bowman advanced in the 100 freestyle.
“I was proud of the maximum effort that every swimmer gave in the meet, and I am incredibly pleased with everyone’s performance this season,” Owensboro Catholic coach Sam Howard said.
Georgia Warren was the lone athlete to advance to the state finals for Owensboro, doing so in one meter diving.
Apollo didn’t advance anyone to the state tournament. Emmitt Brock finished 14th in 100 butterfly and 15th in 50 freestyle. Their 200 freestyle relay team finished 14th and their 200 medley relay placed 16th.
The diving portion of the state finals starts Feb. 20th at the University of Kentucky and the swimming portion begins the following day.
