In an important district matchup, Owensboro Catholic rode a dominant third quarter to come from behind to beat Daviess County on the road 64-48. Taylor Mannahan scored nine of her 14 points in the third, while Riley Karmin added five points to help the Lady Aces take a 48-41 lead entering the fourth quarter.
In the first half, the Lady Panthers Lily Hoagland and Zoey Beehn combined for 27 of their team’s 33 points – giving them a six-point lead entering halftime. Neither Hoagland or Beehn would score in the third quarter, and would just add eight total points in the fourth. In their stead, Kennedy Lane came alive in the second half, finishing with 14 of her 18 points.
Only Lane and Maddie Barren would score for Daviess County in the third quarter, a testament to the Lady Aces defensive changes.
“I thought in the second half we did better without rotations in our press and we were able to get some turnovers that led to some easy buckets for us,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Michael Robertson said.
Daviess County would rediscover their shooting in the fourth quarter, but were unable to chip away at the lead. Beehn led all scorers with 20 points, while the Lady Aces Riley led her team with 16 points. Aubrey Randolph finished with five points, making her only the 20th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Moving forward, Robertson wants to see his team clean up their play in the final quarter.
“Late in the game we have got to realize the time and score and know how to play” Robertson said. “We didn’t need to horse anything and need to slow down and make the right play.”
For Daviess County, head coach Natalie Payne acknowledged they need to play a complete game.
“I was proud of our fight,” Payne said. “Hats off to Catholic, they forced us to get back on our heels in the third quarter. They outscored us 21-9 in the third. We must continue to fight for four quarters.
