Hosting their first-ever Dual Tournament on Friday, Trinity wrestling finished sixth – falling to Bethlehem (66-6), Callaway County (54-18) Bardstown (58-0) Owensboro (47-12), and Ft. Knox (35-18). Bardstown finished first, while the Red Devils were the runner ups with both team’s going 4-1.
For Trinity, Owen Hamilton at 106 and Luke Hamilton at 132 finished 3-2 on the day.
“The kids are making good progress. We are starting to win a few matches and get into the second and third period of some that we don’t and that’s a start,” Trinity head coach Curtis Martinson said. “Although we don’t have a big enough team to win the duals, as time goes the kids will gain confidence, more technique, and later the wins will come too. I am very proud of the courage and grit they show daily.”
The Red Devils finished second after falling to Bardstown, but started off the day by beating Bethlehem 40-36. In their second match, they lost to Bardstown 44-36, but beat Calloway County 42-36 thanks to a clutch pin by Adam Quintana Melton (106). In their fourth match, they defeated Ft. Knox 54-24, before rounding out the day by taking down Trinity.
Both Juan Quintana and Kameryis Rodriquez finished the day undefeated, while Adam Quintana Melton, Isrell Roberts, Isaac Mattingly, and Tristan Kirkman all had impressive showings.
“We gave up some points due to forfeits in unfilled weight classes. All in all, this was a whole group effort and a very positive milestone for our young program,” Owensboro head coach Griffen Kelley said. “Additionally, this is one of the first times in program history that the team has brought home some hardware. We still have work to do, but we are focused on getting a little bit better every day and making the most of every opportunity to step on the mat.”
