Gavin Wimsatt, who entered the transfer portal after one year at the University of Kentucky, announced Sunday via social media that he has committed to Jacksonville State University for his final year of eligibility.
Wimsatt was a standout quarterback for Owensboro High School. His career at OHS ended four games into the 2021 season, as he graduated early to enroll at Rutgers University.
Wimsatt had an up-and-down Rutgers tenure that culminated in winning the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl. That year, Wimsatt helped the Scarlett Knights finish 7-6 before taking down Miami 31-24 in the Bowl game. In his three seasons at Rutgers, Wimsatt completed 46.6% of his passes for 2,537 yards and 14 touchdowns, while throwing 14 interceptions. He carried the ball 180 times for 628 yards and 11 scores.
In 2024, Wimsatt transferred to the University of Kentucky, where he spent most of the season as the backup to Brock Vandagriff and was utilized in wildcat formations. He started multiple games due to Vandagriff’s injuries, finishing the year 16-of-39 for 287 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns.
Wimsatt announced in December 2024 that he was entering the transfer portal. He announced his commitment to JSU on January 5 in an Instagram post.
JSU joined Conference USA of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) beginning with the 2023 season. The Gamecocks finished the 2024 season 9-5, losing a nailbiter to Ohio in the Cure Bowl 30-27.
