The girls’ 3rd Region All-A Tournament kicked off yesterday with Hancock County taking down Frederick Fraize (Cloverport) and Owensboro Catholic defeating McLean County. In other action, Owensboro won a thriller against Christian County in overtime.

Hancock County 55, Frederick Fraize (Cloverport) 15

Hosting the 3rd Region All-A, Hancock County kicked off the tournament with an impressive 55-15 win over Frederick Fraize – highlighted by suffocating defense. The Lady Hornets recorded 24 steals and held the Lady Aces scoreless in the third quarter.

“I think in the first quarter we did a great job defensively,” Hancock County head coach Kevin Husk said. “In the second quarter, we subbed in some of our bench players who don’t have a lot of varsity experience in that situation. The girls are just trying to figure things out and solve some pieces because they haven’t played a whole lot together. I think defensively we just came out and reminded ourselves of what we wanted to do. My varsity girls did a really good job there in the third quarter.”

Carolina Jones made her presence felt on both sides of the ball, scoring 18 points and adding five assists, two rebounds, and eight steals. Ansley House grabbed nine rebounds to go with her 10 points, four steals, and one assist.

“The girls were really focused today and did what we asked them to do,” Husk said. “As a coach, you can’t ask for much more than giving great effort, diving on the court after loose balls, and trying to execute what we talked about doing.”

The Lady Hornets advanced to the finals of the All-A and await the winner of Owensboro Catholic and Trinity (Whitesville) which is scheduled for Monday, but could be moved due to the pending weather.

Owensboro 64, Christian County 61

Shalyn Sprinkles exploded in the fourth quarter and overtime for 30 points to help the Lady Devils hold off Christian County 64-61. The senior guard finished with a career high 40 points, going 17-18 at the line. Abby Sapp and Heleina John each added nine points, while Gizelle Whitlock (4), Zah’Niyah Board, (1), and Unique Carter-Swanagan (1) rounded out the teams scoring.

“We didn’t play our best basketball today, but we hung in there enough to pull out a win against a quality team in Christian County,” Owensboro head coach Jansen Locher said. “Sprinkles provided us with offense in the fourth quarter and overtime, but it was our team defense that won the game for us.”

Owensboro Catholic 72, McLean County 25

Aubrey Randolph continued her hot streak, scoring 18 points to help the Lady Aces cruise past McLean County 72-25 to advance to the semi-finals of the 3rd Region All-A. Allie Marston added 12 points, seven of which came in the second half, while Claudia Munsey finished with 11 points.

“We have to get better in our halfcourt sets and play more disciplined on defense,” Owensboro catholic head coach Michael Robertson said. “We are getting into bad habits gambling just go gamble.”

For the Lady Cougars, Katie McCoy led the way with seven points, while Karlee Floyd and Mallory Hampton each added six points.

“We played a great team tonight,” McLean County head coach Eli Ellis said. “Tonight showed us what we need to continue to work on to get ready for district games coming up.”
