Sitting in last place after a rough first round, the Owensboro boys’ golf team was in a hole too deep to overcome for a shot at the state title. Still, they bounced back with a solid day two performance to finish 7th overall.
The Red Devils shot a collective 332 on Tuesday and 306 on Wednesday for a final score of 638.
“We struggled the first day and took ourselves out of contention, but we really battled back today to claim a 7th-place finish,” Owensboro head coach Pat Hume said.
Madison Central finished first, shooting 596 over the two days. Just four strokes behind was Trinity (Louisville), while McCracken County was third with a 614.
Individually, Jax Malone shot 80-76 to lead the Red Devils with a 156, tying him for 38th overall. Other scores for OHS were Nolan Warren (158), Will Rickard (161), Cole Crews (168), and Will Hume (169).
“Out of over 175 high school golf teams, to finish 7th in the state is a nice accomplishment by a great group of young men,” coach Hume said. “They have truly left their mark on OHS golf. I could not be prouder of them. Great golfers, great students, and great character young men who will go on to do great things in the future.”
Daviess County’s Grant Broughton also competed. He shot 78 on the first day and 80 on the second for a score of 158, tying him with seven others for 46th overall.
“I thought Grant showed grit the way he hung in there,” Daviess County head coach Lars King said. He didn’t hit the way he expected, but he kept a good attitude and battled until the last hole.”
