The Apollo girls’ soccer team outlasted Owensboro in penalty kicks Tuesday night to earn a 3-2 victory Tuesday night.

“I thought it was a hard-fought performance from the girls tonight,” Apollo head coach Zach Akin said. “We played well in possession and put into the match some of the concepts we’ve been working on in training. We committed a couple of costly mistakes, but the girls battled back and proved what they’re capable of going forward.”

The Lady Devils’ Hailey Westerfield fed Lily Nieman in the 16th minute to give Owensboro a 1-0 lead. Amelia Calhoun doubled her team’s advantage, scoring an unassisted goal in the 37th minute.

Unfazed by the deficit, Apollo stormed back in the second half, with Kara Green and Jada Pollard each finding the net. Lilli Ruth and Green each recorded an assist.

It took nine penalty kicks before the E-Gals secure the win, converting on seven attempts compared to six by the Lady Devils.

“Things started to click tonight and I thought we played well,” Owensboro head coach Sarah Poole said. “I still think there is more to come from the girls and we are continuing to see them grow. We broke down a bit in the second half, which was when they scored their pair of goals. But we corrected it and held the game 2-2. I’m proud of the girls and the effort they put into the 90-minute game.”
