Hawesville native and a Hancock County High School graduate Matt Wright is taking the next step in his coaching career as the newly named manager of the Trinity High School varsity baseball team.
“I’m excited to be able to lead the Trinity Raiders baseball team into a new era,” Wright said. “Trinity High School is filled with an amazing group of people, from the faculty and staff to the administration. The amount of support the community provides the school and students is something you want to be a part of as well. I’m looking forward to bringing my passion and knowledge of the game of baseball to the young men of the program.”
In 2024, the Trinity baseball team took a step back, finishing the season with just four wins. From 2021 to 2023, Trinity advanced to the 3rd region tournament as the 12th District tournament runner-up each year.
A three-sport athlete in high school, Wright obtained a scholarship to play baseball collegiately at Mid-Continent University before transferring to Murray State.
According to Trinity athletic director John Kirkpatrick, Wright brings a strong coaching background at various levels to the school. However, this will be his first year managing at the varsity level.
“Coach Wright cares deeply about our Catholic schools, and I know he is the right person for this job,” Kirkpatrick said. “He brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and passion for the sport that will mold well for our program.”
Trinity will host the 3rd Region All-A Classic and the 3rd Region KHSAA Baseball Tournament at Whitesville Community Park this season.
“Our immediate goal is to lay a strong foundation upon which the program can be built,” Wright said. “I’m fortunate to have a strong senior class returning, and I’ll rely on them to be a major factor in that foundation. I’ll also seek to get more kids involved in this rebuilding process. At the end of the day, I’m looking to put a competitive team on the field every game.”
