The Owensboro Western All-Stars kicked off the first round of the Cal Ripken Regional Championship in Terra Haute with a 5-4 win over Campbellsville on Thursday night.
The squad had amassed a 5-0 lead entering the final inning, and things looked promising. Campbellsville launched a last-ditch effort in the bottom of the sixth but eventually fell short by one run.
Despite boasting several heavy hitters and averaging double-digit runs across the postseason, Western jumped out to a slow start with three scoreless innings. They eventually scored one in the fourth and another in the fifth. They added three much-needed insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
Daken Havener led the squad at the plate with two RBIs. Lucas Patton, Neil Quisenberry, and Jaxon Dickens also added one hit a piece. Patton led the team in runs with two.
Quisenberry earned the win for the All-Stars, striking out six and allowing no runs on no hits in four innings of work. Jaxson Boiling entered in relief, surrendering three runs on two hits before passing the torch to Cal Murphy and Cartavius Howard, who managed to hold on for the save.
