Daviess County’s Brayden Wells signed with the Brescia Bearcats to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level.
Wells is currently in his final season with the Panthers who sit 15-16 so far. So far in his senior season, he has the third-most RBIs on the team with 14. Having earned the opportunity to play college baseball means a lot to Wells as he gets to continue playing the sport he loves.
“It means a lot,” he said. “Knowing that I am able to play the sport I love for a few more years is great! I get to do what a lot of kids dream of doing, which is playing at the college level.”
Wells was drawn to Brescia thanks to the fact that the coaching staff was on the same page as him, and there are former teammates of his currently playing for the Bearcats.
“I chose Brescia mainly because it felt right,” he said. “Knowing that I have past teammates playing there and some of the guys I’m currently playing with are going there made it easier. Coach Herbig also wants the same thing that I want, which is to work hard and win.”
Going to college in your hometown has its perks as Wells said he is glad he will be close to his loved ones, and he doesn’t have to struggle to navigate a new city. While attending school Wells said he will be studying business management. He won’t be alone at Brescia either as multiple Panthers have signed to the school as well. Having some great friends alongside him on a new team has Wells fired up, he said. To get ready for his first college season, Wells plans to waste no time after his high school season ends.
“First and foremost, finishing high school ball and then immediately getting into strength and conditioning,” he said. “I know college ball is no joke, and if I want a chance then I need to work my butt off. I have to get stronger, faster, and better if I want to compete with the guys at the college level.”
Wells still has some baseball left to play as a high schooler before his focus shifts to college, but he has already begun to reflect on some of the things he will miss about high school athletics. Having the right people around has made high school baseball that much more enjoyable for Wells, and he has years of memories he will be taking with him to Brescia.
“I’m going to miss all the amazing guys that I’ve played the sport with since before high school ball,” he said. “Everyone says college ball is some of the most fun that you can have, but high school ball is just as fun when you have the right guys on the right team with you. We’re like family. I’m also going to miss the games and practices. Nothing is better than being with the best group of guys who all love the sport like it’s their kid. It’s something I’ve been doing for six years, but I’ve made a lot of memories in those years that I get to take with me.”
