Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic both played double headers on the day while Apollo’s win-streak was ended by St. Xavier.
St. Xavier 2, AHS 1
Apollo took on St. Xavier in a close game that saw the Eagle’s win streak snapped due to a 2-1 defeat.
St. Xavier opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, Apollo tied the game up with a run in the top of the third. However, St. Xavier took back the lead in the bottom of the inning with 1 run. Apollo held St. Xavier scoreless for the rest of the game, but they couldn’t find the tying run before St. Xavier came out with the 2-1 win.
On the mound for the Eagles was Noah Cook who recorded 5 strikeouts across 5 innings, and Ross Milburn who had 2 strikeouts in 1 inning. At the plate, Milburn, Grayson Smith, Sam Holder, Easton Blandford, Ty Lillpop and Garrett Lanham all had 1 hit. Lanham scored the lone run for AHS as well.
DCHS
Daviess County played in two games of varying success as they were defeated 2-1 against Franklin-Simpson and they beat South Warren 8-1.
In their first game, DCHS went down early as Franklin-Simpson scored 2 runs in the opening inning. DC got 1 run back in the second inning, but they struggled to get past Franklin-Simpson’s defense. Daviess County was held scoreless for the rest of the game, but they held Franklin-Simpson from running the score as well.
On the mound for the Panthers was Brett Poole with 6 strikeouts across 6 innings. At the plate, Lucas Ward had 1 RBI and 3 hits, and Gavin Howard scored the lone run.
In their second game against South Warren, the first two innings were more even as neither team could claim an early lead. The Panthers pounced in the third inning however, as they scored 4 runs to jump ahead on the board. They extended their lead with 3 runs in the fourth inning to put the score at 7-0. After a scoreless fifth, DCHS scored 1 more run in the top of the sixth, and South Warren got on the board with their only run in the bottom of the inning. DC closed out the win at 8-1.
On the mound for DC was Weston Lawrence who recorded 4 strikeouts across 7 innings. Noah Ranburger hit 2 doubles, had 1 RBI and scored 2 runs. Carter Nichols hit a double and had 2 RBIs. Brody Brubaker had 1 RBI and scored 3 runs, and Poole had 1 RBI and scored 1 run. Logan Mewes had 3 hits and 1 RBI, and Ward scored 2 runs.
OCHS
Owensboro Catholic won both games of their double header as they defeated University Heights 2-0 and Calloway County 7-5.
In their game against Calloway County, OC scored 3 runs in the opening inning to hold an early lead. Calloway got 2 of those runs back in the top of the second, but OCHS scored 1 run to keep them from the lead. Catholic held Calloway scoreless for the next two innings before scoring another run in the fifth. OCHS scored 2 runs in the sixth to seemingly close out the game, but Calloway wasn’t done yet. In the final inning Calloway scored 3 runs close in on the lead, but Owensboro Catholic shut them down for a final 7-5 scoreline.
On the mound for the Aces was Ben Hyland who racked up 7 strikeouts across 6 innings, Brady Prusz who pitched for 0.1 innings, and Luke Quinn who had 1 strikeout in 0.2 innings. At the plate, Jake Murphy hit a double, had 1 RBI and scored 1 run. Houston Flynn had 1 RBIs with 2 scored runs, and Brady Atwell had 1 RBI with 1 run scored. Deuce Sims had 1 RBI, and Jaxson White, Drew Miles and Tucker Evans all scored 1 run each.
In their game against University Heights, the first three innings went scoreless as neither team could secure an early lead. OC finally broke through and took the lead with a run in the fourth. The fifth inning saw Catholic add 1 more run to their lead before shutting down University Heights for the rest of the game. OCHS took the win 2-0.
On the mound for the Aces was Barrett Evans who racked up 8 strikeouts across 6 innings, and Quinn who had 2 strikeouts in 1 inning. At the plate, Sims hit a home run for the only RBI of the game, and Mason Moser scored the other run.
