Apollo had big success in their double header at home as they secured two wins. Daviess County had a busy day as well as they finished play in the Castle Invitational with two wins and a narrow 3-2 loss against Tri-West Hendricks (Lizton) who was ranked #4 in Class 3A in Indiana last year.
AHS
Apollo hosted both Butler (Louisville) and Christian County at home, and the E-gals defeated both teams.
They defeated Butler in a 9-4 victory. Butler took the upper hand early on with 3 runs in the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, Apollo got on the board with 1 run in the third. They brought the gap to just 1 with another run in the fourth. Butler would extend their lead with 1 run in the fifth, but AHS took the lead in the bottom of the inning with 2 runs. Apollo put the nail in the coffin with a 5-run performance in the sixth inning to close out the game at 9-4.
On the mound, Mollie Julian pitched for the first 5 innings, and Hannah Holder recorded 2 strikeouts in the final 2 innings. At the plate, Tyler Hall hit a home run as well as 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Macy Calhoun hit a double and had 2 RBIs, and Mallory Velotta and Taylor Clark both hit a double and had a 1 RBI while scoring 2 and 1 run respectively. Arianna Ramirez scored 2 runs and Liza Page, Elizabeth Gardner and Grace Parker all scored 1 run.
The E-gals then took down Christian County 10-5. The game started out scoreless after the first inning, but Christian would strike first in the second inning. Apollo found big success at the plate in the third inning as they scored 5 runs to put the score at 5-1. Christian brought the gap down to just 1 run with 3 runs scored in the fourth. After a scoreless fifth, Apollo scored 5 more runs in the sixth inning to secure the win. Christian scored 1 run in the seventh, but AHS took the win at 10-5.
Hall had a big game at the plate with another home run, a triple, 5 RBIs, 2 hits, and 2 scored runs. Ramirez hit a double and had 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and 2 hits. Velotta had 1 RBI, 2 runs scored and 2 hits. Calhoun and Emersyn Bullington both had 1 RBI as well. On the mound again for AHS was Holder, who pitched for the first 4 innings and had 1 strikeout, and Julian who had an impressive 7 strikeouts across 3 innings to help seal the victory late in the game.
DCHS
Daviess County played three games as they finished their play in the Castle Invitational in Newburgh, IN. They capped off the competition with 2 wins on the day and 1 close loss to a tough Tri-West Hendricks team.
The Lady Panthers defeated Floyd Central (Floyds Knobs), IN in a big 19-9 victory. Floyd may have struck first with a run in the opening inning, but the Lady Panthers came out swinging in the top of the second as they scored 5 runs to take a 5-1 lead. Despite Floyd getting 2 runs back in the bottom of the second, DC extended their lead significantly with a 9-run performance in the top of the third. Floyd scored 2 runs in the bottom of the third, but DC held them scoreless in the fourth. Both teams were in their groove in the fifth inning as they both added 4 runs to their tallies. DCHS scored a final run in the seventh to close out the win at 19-9.
Lilah Morris hit a home run as well as 2 RBIs and 1 scored run. Bennett had 4 RBIs, scored 1 run and had 3 hits. Danielle Beckwith had 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored and 3 hits. Newman and Makayla Rowan both had 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and 2 hits. Sadie Morris had 2 RBIs and 1 scored run, and Briley Henry and Molly Hancock both had 1 RBI and scored 2 runs. Callie Smith had an RBI and 3 hits while Avery Morris scored 2 runs. On the mound was Sophia Cain who recorded 9 strikeouts through 7 innings.
Daviess County also had a big 11-1 win over Pike Central (Petersburg), IN. DC took the lead early with 3 runs in the first inning. Both teams scored 1 run in the second before DCHS extended their lead further with 3 runs in the third inning. They held Pike Central scoreless for the fourth and fifth innings while scoring 2 in each to end the game early at 11-1.
On the mound was Story Hume who had 1 strikeout and only allowed 3 hits across 5 innings. At the plate, Kylie Clark hit a double, had 3 RBIs and had 2 hits. Newman hit a double and had 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and 3 hits. Smith had 2 RBIs as well, and Hancock had 1 RBI with 1 run scored. Henry, Rowan and Sadie Morris all scored 2 runs, Bennett and Beckwith both scored 1 run.
Daviess County’s close 3-2 defeat against Tri-West Hendricks was sealed with a walk-off home run. After Tri-West scored 1 run in the first inning, the two teams held each other scoreless for 2 innings until DC took the lead with 2 runs in the fourth. DCHS defended their lead for the next 2 innings before a walk-off homer by Tri-West to right field scored 2 runs, giving DC the 3-2 loss.
Karmyn Timmons helped keep the game close on the mound with 8 strikeouts and allowing 5 hits across 6.2 innings. Annie Newman hit a double, scored 1 run and had 2 hits. Shelby Bennett scored the other run.
