Baseball recap (April 27): OHS, OCHS

Owensboro Catholic played at EKU in the All “A” Classic and defeated Walton-Verona who eliminated them last year. Meanwhile, Owensboro took to the road and came out on top in a close high-scoring game against Barren County. 

OCHS 3, Walton-Verona 2

 Owensboro Catholic and Walton-Verona battled it out across 9 innings in the All “A” classic, and the Aces came out on top with a 3-2 walk-off victory. 

The game got off to a hot start as 4 runs out of the game’s 5 were scored in the first inning. Walton-Verona scored 2 and Owensboro Catholic tied it up in the bottom of the inning with 2 of their own. The two teams then locked horns for 7 straight innings. OCHS struggled to score, but on the mound was Luke Quinn, who had 2 strikeouts in 3 innings, Lane Hundley, who had 4 strikeouts in 5 innings, and Jaxson White, who had 1 strikeout in the final inning, who helped the defense keep Walton-Verona scoreless. 

In the ninth inning Parker Heistand hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Barrett Evans to make his way to second base. Then Mason Moser stepped up and hit an RBI double on a 1-2 count to send Evans across home plate for the win. 

Also at the plate was Houston Flynn who hit a triple, had 2 hits and scored 1 run, Brady Atwell who hit a double, had an RBI and scored 1 run and Christopher Burns had an RBI as well. 

OHS 11, Barren Co. 10

Owensboro traveled to Barren County where they battled it out in a high-scoring 11-10 victory. 

Owensboro struck first with 3 runs in the top of the first inning, and Barren scored 1 in the bottom of the inning. The Red Devils extended their lead with 3 more runs in the second inning. Barren got 1 run back in the third before OHS continued to try to keep the game out of reach with 2 runs in the top of the fourth. The bottom of the inning saw Barren score another run. 

With the score at 8-3, OHS seemingly put the game away with 3 more runs in the top of the fifth, but Barren got all 3 of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Barren then put OHS in a dangerous situation after they had a big 4-run performance in the bottom of the sixth to put the score at 11-10. The Red Devils anchored down on defense and shut down Barren to secure the 11-10 win. 

OHS had a multitude of pitchers take the mound. Trevor DeLacey had 2 strikeouts in 3 innings, Kaeb Ashley pitched 1.1 innings, Ty Ashley pitched for 0.2 innings, Brady Benjamin had 1 strikeout in 1 inning and Cayden Ray had a strikeout in the final inning. Lake Wilson led the team at the plate with a home run, a double, 4 hits, 2 RBIs and 3 scored runs. Ray had 3 RBIs, 2 hits and 2 runs scored, and Ty Ashley had 3 RBIs and 3 hits as well. Blake Kimbrell had an RBI and Evan Hampton had 3 hits and scored 4 runs. Will Rickard and Will Hume both scored 1 run as well.
