Baseball recap (April 1): AHS, DCHS, OHS, OCHS

The Owensboro schools all took a trip south to the sunny beaches of Florida where they will play in various games and tournaments in the coming days. Easter Sunday saw Daviess County fall 8-4 against Lafayette. This time around Apollo, Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic all secured wins while Owensboro suffered a defeat. 

AHS 2, Greenwood 1

Apollo and Greenwood faced off in a close first game of the Panama City Beach Bash that saw Apollo narrowly win 2-1 in extra innings. 

Noah Cook played a big role on the mound in the Eagles’ win as he helped hold off Greenwood and take the game into extra innings with 10 strikeouts across 7 innings while only allowing 5 hits. Grayson Smith pitched for one inning and had 2 strikeouts to close out the game. On the plate, Sam Holder had 2 hits, one of which included a double. Easton Blandford had 1 RBI and 2 hits. Ty Lilipop had 1 RBI as well.

DCHS 9, Hatton (Town Creek), AL 2

Daviess County had a comfortable 9-2 against Alabama side Hatton in their first game of the Fort Walton Beach Bash. 

Hatton took control of the game in the first inning as they held a 2-0 lead through the second inning. Daviess county tied the game back up in the bottom of the third with 2 runs of their own. The Panthers took the lead with 2 more runs in the next inning, and they extended their lead even further in the fifth. After scoring 3 final runs in the sixth to put the nail in the coffin, Daviess County held Hatton scoreless for the sixth inning in a row to close out the 9-2 win. 

After Hatton’s two runs in the first inning, Cameron Rickard, Brodie Tucker and Carter Nichols combined for 5 strikeouts and only allowed 1 hit throughout the game. Gavin Howard hit a double, had 2 RBIs and scored 1 run. Logan Mewes hit a triple and scored 1 run. Gage Hagan hit a double, had 1 RBI and scored 2 runs. Lucas Ward scored 2 runs as well.

Pinellas Park (Largo), FL 8, OHS 5

Owensboro took on Pinellas Park in an 8-5 defeat. 

Pinellas Park had a commanding start as they quickly took a 5-0 lead after the first inning. Owensboro got on the scoreboard with 1 run in the second, but Pinellas Park extended their lead with 2 runs that same inning. After cutting into the lead with a run in the third, OHS were held scoreless in the fourth. Pinellas Park scored 1 in the fifth before OHS scored 3 final runs in the last two innings. The final score was 8-5. 

Trevor DeLacey had the only extra base hit with a double, and he had 2 hits while scoring 1 run. Ty Ashley had the lone RBI as well. On the mound for Owensboro was Lake Wilson with 1 strikeout and Kaleb Ashley with 3 strikeouts. 

OCHS 15, Mayfield 1

Owensboro Catholic also found success in their opening game of the Panama City Beach Bash as they had a 15-1 blowout win over Mayfield. 

Catholic heated up fast at the plate as they scored 5 runs in the first inning. They tightened their grip on the game by holding Mayfield scoreless while extending their lead with 1 run in the third and 4 runs in the fourth. Mayfield finally got on the board with 1 run in the sixth, but OCHS scored 5 more runs to bring the final score to 15-1.

Parker Heistand had a big game at the plate with 2 triples, 5 RBIs and 3 hits. Deuce Sims and Christopher Burns both had 2 RBIs, had 1 hit and scored 2 runs, and Burns hit a double as well. Ben Hyland hit a double and had 2 RBIs. Brady Atwell scored 3 runs and had 1 RBI, and Houston Flynn and Jaxson White both scored 3 runs as well. 

On the mound, Barrett Evans had 4 strikeouts while only allowing 1 hit across 4 innings, and Brady Prusz had 1 strikeout in 1 inning.
