The Owensboro and Edmonson County softball teams turned their pre-season scrimmage into something more meaningful as players, coaches and made a big donation to OASIS women’s shelter that included canned goods, personal hygiene items and blankets.

Owensboro softball head coach Quincy Moorman got together with Edmonson head coach Alex Jane Massey ahead of their scrimmage and suggested the idea of donating to the local women’s shelter. In place of a gate fee, they asked parents and spectators to instead bring canned goods, non-perishable foods and other items. Moorman said the turnout for the donation was great and it was a very worthwhile experience for everyone involved.

“We were able to donate $100 cash, plus a couple hundred pounds of canned goods, personal hygiene items and other things (blankets, towels, etc.),” he said. “Edmonson County got off the bus with a tote full of items, several bags of items and parents brought items or donated money as well. Our fans did the same. It was a great turnout. When we delivered to OASIS, the staff met with our girls and coaching staff and explained what they do and who they serve. It was a very worthwhile experience for us all. Shout out to Edmonson County for participating!”

According to their website, OASIS women’s shelter is a Domestic Violence Program for battered women and their dependent children. OASIS addresses the unique needs of victims of domestic violence trapped in the cycle of violence. Located in Owensboro, Kentucky, and built on the “Empowerment Model”, OASIS provides a safe place for women and their children to escape the trauma and devastation of domestic violence.
