Girls’ Basketball recap (Feb. 22): AHS, OHS

Apollo and Owensboro both finished out their regular seasons not how they planned as Apollo were defeated by Madisonville-North Hopkins and Owensboro lost to Bethlehem. 

Madisonville-North Hopkins 49, AHS 41

Apollo hosted Madisonville-North Hopkins at home for their final regular season game, and they just barely fell short as they lost 49-41. 

Both teams were slow to get started as Apollo trailed 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. Offense got moving in the second as Jenna Dant and Jennifer Lee both had 6 points to help AHS to 12 in the quarter, but Madisonville scored 17 to lead 27-19 at halftime. The third quarter saw both teams hold one another to 9 points each. The final quarter saw both teams evenly score again with 13 points each, but Madisonville’s lead held out until the buzzer and they took the win at 49-41.

Leading the E-gals in scoring was Lee with 19 points while shooting 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Dant followed behind with 14 points and 4 of 5 on free throws. 

Bethlehem 79, OHS 52

Owensboro played their final regular season game on the road against Bethlehem where they suffered a tough 79-52 defeat. The Lady Red Devils end their regular season with a record of 17-9.

Both teams found their rhythms on offense early as OHS made 4 threes as part of their 18 points, but Bethlehem led 24-18 at the end of the first quarter. Owensboro struggled to keep up their momentum in the second quarter as they were outscored 17-8, and Bethlehem led at halftime 43-26. The Lady Red Devils’ struggles continued in the third quarter as they were outscored 19-10. Despite making 3 threes and 16 points in an effort to cut the gap in the fourth quarter, Apollo were defeated 79-52.

Owenbsoro had a balanced scoring effort that saw 9 different players contribute to scoring. Leading the Lady Red Devils in scoring was Heleina John with a three pointer and 10 points. Shalyn Sprinkles followed behind with 2 threes and 9 points.
