Girls’ basketball recap (Feb. 2): AHS vs. OHS, THS

Owensboro had a balanced scoring effort that saw 10 of their players contribute points in their 69-34 win over Apollo. Meanwhile, Trinity suffered a tough loss at home against Edmonson County. 

OHS 69, AHS 34

Owensboro’s commanding 69-34 victory over Apollo moved them to 14-7 on the season and 7-1 in regional play. 

The Lady Red Devils took quick control of the game as 3 three pointers from Shalyn Sprinkles, Unique Carter-Swanagan and Lulu Greer helped them gain an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The E-gals defense put up a strong effort in the second quarter to keep the scoring close, and OHS only outscored AHS by a single basket at 10-8. Leading  28-15 going into the third quarter, Owensboro extended their lead by outscoring Apollo 14-10. OHS put the nail in the coffin in the final quarter as they held Apollo to 9 points while they scored another 26, and they closed the game out at 69-34.

Ten Lady Red Devils scored at least 3 points in what was an all-around scoring effort. Sprinkles led the team with 16 points and 100% FT% after shooting 7 of 7. Abby Sapp made 3 threes as part of her 10 points, and Heleina John scored 10 as well with 2 threes. 

Leading the E-gals in scoring was Jenna Dant with 14 points. Jennifer Lee followed behind with 8 points on the night. 

Edmonson Co. 44, THS 29

Trinity were defeated 44-29 at home against regional opponents Edmonson County. 

The first half saw both teams in a close deadlock as the halftime score was 10-10. Trinity fell behind in the second half as Edmonson found more success on offense. THS were outscored 25-8 in the third quarter. Despite outscoring Edmonson 11-9 in the fourth, THS were defeated 44-29.

Leading the Lady Raiders in scoring was Sarah Payne and Kenzie McDowell with 12 points each. McDowell had 2 threes and 100% FT% after shooting 4 of 4 from the line.
