Boys’ Basketball recap (Feb. 3): DCHS, OCHS, THS

A few Owensboro schools competed in tournaments at the Sportscenter and on the road. Daviess County picked up a win on the day while Owensboro Catholic and Trinity just barely fell short in their close defeats. 

DCHS 70, Evansville North, IN 61

Daviess County had five players score in the double digits in their 70-61 win over Evansville North as part of the Ruoff Mortgage Classic. 

Both teams found their rhythm on offense early as the first quarter ended 18-18. The Panthers made 4 threes in the quarter as well. Daviess County’s defense tightened their grip around Evansville North as they held them to just 6 points in the second quarter. They scored 19 to go into halftime leading 37-24. Evansville North pushed  back by scoring 17 to DC’s 14. Both teams upped the intensity in the final quarter, and Daviess County lost the scoring battle by a single point. Their lead was held intact and they won 70-61. 

Jonathan Moss led the Panthers in scoring with 3 threes and 21 points. Moss also shot 8 of 11 from the free throw line. Gage Phelps had the next highest points with 13, 2 threes and 3 of 4 on free throws. Jaxon Brown, Ayden Ayer and DeAaron Watkins all scored 11 on the night as well. 

St. Xavier 54, OCHS 52

Owensboro Catholic lost their game in the Wes Strader Schoolboy Shootout against St. Xavier by just 2 points at 54-52. 

Catholic secured an early 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. St. Xavier took back the lead in the second quarter after outscoring OCHS 19-8, and the Aces trailed 29-23 at halftime. Despite the OCHS offense scoring 17, St. Xavier extended their lead with another 21 points. The Aces nearly stole the match in the final quarter as they held St. Xavier to just 4 points, but they didn’t have enough to get the final bucket to avoid a 54-52 defeat. 

Luke Beickman was named player of the game for his 18-points performance. Kaiser Frick had the next highest points with 9 on the night. 

Evansville Day, IN 69, THS 60

Trinity fell short in their 69-60 defeat in the Ruoff Mortgage Classic against Evansville Day. 

Trinity got their offense in motion early on as 3 three pointers help their 12-point effort, but they trailed 17-12 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams kept the scoring in the second quarter close as Evansville Day outscored THS 18-16. After trailing 35-28 going into the third, Trinity continued their push to cut into the lead with 18 points, but Evansville Day kept ahead by scoring 20 in the quarter. Both teams scored 14 in the final quarter, and Trinity were defeated 69-60.

Leading the Raiders in scoring was Will Hernandez with 14 points. Connor Hatfield followed behind with 12 points and 3 of 4 from the free throw line.
