Boys’ Basketball recap (Feb. 13): AHS, DCHS, OHS, OCHS, THS

All of the Owensboro schools saw action today as Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro Catholic and Trinity all got wins on the day, but Owensboro suffered a very close defeat. 

AHS 58, Muhlenberg 56

Apollo secured a close 58-56 win at home against Muhlenberg County. 

Apollo started off slightly behind as Muhlenberg held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Eagle took the lead in the second quarter as their defense held Muhlenberg to 8 points. This led the way for the offense to score 18 and take the lead going into halftime at 29-22. AHS experienced some push back from Muhlenberg in the third as they were outscored 18-15. Despite being outscored by a single bucket in the final quarter, Apollo held off Muhlenberg long enough for the buzzer to sound on their 58-56 victory.

Leading the Eagles in scoring was Tate Powers with 3 threes and 18 points. Luke Jarboe made 2 threes to go with his 16 points. Landon Henning followed behind with 13 points on the night.

DCHS 58, McLean 40

Daviess County were successful on their home court as well as they took down McLean County 58-40. 

Daviess County took control of the game early on as 6 Panthers contributed to a 16-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. The DCHS defense held McLean County to 6 points while they extended their lead with 20 points. They led at halftime 36-11. The scoring in the third quarter was kept close as McLean outscored DC 13-12. Despite being outscored 16-10, Daviess County closed out the win at 58-40. 

Gage Phelps led the Panthers in scoring with 4 threes and 21 points. DeAaron Watkins followed behind with 12 points.

Christian Co. 58, OHS 56 

Owensboro lost by a single bucket at 58-56 in their away game against Christian County. 

The game started out evenly matched as OHS led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams increased the tempo on offense as Dayshaun Sanders scored 10 points to help the Red Devils outscore Christian 20-18 and lead 34-31 at halftime. Owensboro’s offense was held to just 9 points in the third quarter as Christian County took the lead with 20 points at 46-43. Despite outscoring Christian 13-12 in the final quarter, it was just barely short of sending the game into overtime and Christian took the win 58-56.

Sanders led the Red Devils in scoring with 3 threes and 18 points. Keaton Hughes followed close behind with 17 points. Michael Acton shot 4 of 4 on free throws as part of his 12 points as well. 

OCHS 67, Breckinridge Co. 48

Owensboro Catholic hosted Breckinridge County at the Sportscenter where they secured a comfortable 67-48 win. 

Both teams got their offenses moving early as Catholic led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the OCHS defense hold Breckinridge to 9 points so they could go into halftime leading 27-21. OCHS extended their lead further in the third by outsourcing Breckinridge 17-11. Breckinridge pushed back in the final quarter with 16 points, but the Aces put the nail in the coffin with 23 points to take the win at 67-48. 

Leading the Aces in scoring was Luke Beickman who had one three pointer, shot 6 of 6 from the free throw line and had 17 total points. Waryn Ebelhar followed behind with 2 threes and 13 points. Tutt Carrico shot 5 of 6 on free throws as part of his 11 points on the night. 

THS 77, Heritage Christian 65

Trinity didn’t travel far as they were hosted by Heritage Christian in a game that saw the Raiders win 77-65. 

Both teams came out swinging as Hayden Aull made 4 threes in the first quarter to help THS outscore Heritage 21-18 in the first quarter. Heritage took the lead in the second quarter by holding Trinity to 13 points while they scored 28. Trailing 46-34 at halftime, the Raiders came into the third quarter determined to take back the lead as they made 6 threes to help them outscore Heritage 33-12. They outscored Heritage 10-7 in the final quarter to close out the win at 77-65. 

Leading the Raiders in scoring was Aull with 7 threes as part of his 25 point-performance. Connor Hatfield had 4 threes of his own to go along with his 17 points. Will Hernandez had one three and 10 points on the night as well.
