Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic both secured comfortable wins while Apollo narrowly lost a battle in overtime against Cumberland County.
Cumberland Co. 69, AHS 64
Apollo and Cumberland battled it out in overtime as Apollo just barely fell short in their 69-64 defeat against Cumberland. Apollo had a small 13-11 lead at the end of the first half to establish an early advantage. A pair of threes from Luke Jarboe and Tate Powers helped AHS keep their lead going into halftime at 30-25. In the third quarter the Eagles scored 13 points to keep a small lead at 43-39. Cumberland mounted a final offensive in the fourth quarter after outsourcing Apollo 20-14 to send it into overtime at 53-53. Apollo fell just short in OT as they were outscored 10-5 to lose 69-64.
The Eagles nearly had all of their scorers score in double digits as Jarboe led the team with 18 points, Max Johnson scored 10 points and Kobe Kelly, Landon Henning, Tate Powers and Eli Williams all had 9 points during the game.
OHS 67, Greenwood 50
Owensboro took down Greenwood in their 67-60 victory in the German American Bank Classic in Bowling Green. Both teams came out aggressive on offense as the first quarter ended 21-20 with OHS leading by 1. The Red Devils held Greenwood to just 5 points in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 35-25 lead. Greenwood pushed back with 16 points during the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to OHS. They closed out the final quarter to win 67-50.
Leading the scoring for the Red Devils was Dayshaun Sanders with 17 points. Will Hume and Keaton Hughes followed close behind with 16 points each.
OCHS 67, Madisonville-North Hopkinsville 49
Owensboro Catholic had no problem taking down Madisonville 67-49 at home. They started off strong early on as they had a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Aces held Madisonville to just 8 points while they scored 20 points to extend their lead to 32-17 at halftime. Both teams kicked it up a notch offensively in the second half as Madisonville scored 14 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth. OCHS overwhelmed them still as they scored 23 in the third quarter to cement the win. The Aces won the game 67-49.
Lading the Aces in scoring was Luke Beickman with an impressive 25-point performance. Beickman had a high FT% as well after shooting 5 of 6 from the line. Solly Smith followed behind with 15 points, and Waryn Ebelhar and Tutt Carrico scored 12 and 11 points respectively as well.
