Boys’ Basketball recap (Jan. 25): OCHS, THS

Owensboro Catholic’s appearance in the All “A” State tournament was cut short as they were eliminated in the first round by Lyon County. Trinity also suffered a loss as they were defeated by Butler County. 

Lyon Co. 72, OCHS 54

Owensboro Catholic suffered an early exit from the All “A” State tournament after falling 72-54 to Lyon County. 

Both teams got their offenses moving early and ended the first quarter at 16-12 with Lyon leading. Catholic struggled to get past a tough Lyon defense in the second quarter as they were held to 6 points while Lyon extended their lead with 23 points. With the halftime score at 39-18, Solly Smith and Luke Beickman combined for 17 points to lead the Aces’ fight to make up for lost ground in the third quarter. They outscored Lyon 18-14 in the third quarter, but their 18 points in the final quarter wasn’t enough to climb back and they were defeated 72-54. 

Beickman scored 24 points total with 3 threes to lead the Aces in scoring. Smith followed behind with 17 points on the night. 

Butler Co. 85, THS 28 

Trinity suffered a tough loss at home as they fell to Butler County 85-28. 

THS’ offense were able to find some success on offense as they scored 10 in the first quarter, but it was not enough to keep up with Butler as they led 26-10 going into the second. Trinity continued to push on offense in the second quarter with 9 points, but they fell even further behind as Butler scored another 26 to go into halftime at 52-19. THS went on to struggle in the second half as they were held to 9 points as Butler took the win at 85-28. 

Connor Hatfield led the Raiders in scoring with 10 points on the night.
