Boys’ Basketball recap (Jan. 23): AHS, DCHS, OHS

Apollo and Daviess County played in regional matchups where Apollo fell short, but Daviess County were able to secure a win. Owensboro went on the road to Indiana where they faced off against Evansville Bosse. 

Grayson Co. 61, AHS 52

Apollo faced off against regional opponents Grayson County and were defeated 61-52. Apollo and Grayson started off evenly matched as Apollo had just a 1-point lead after the first quarter at 12-11. Grayson took the lead in the second quarter after outsourcing AHS 16-10 to gain a slight 27-23 advantage at halftime. Apollo scored 13 in the third quarter as they tried to retake the lead, but Gayson scored 15 to keep it from their grasp. With the game still in reach, AHS had 3 threes as part of their 16 points in the final quarter. However, Grayson scored 19 to close out the game at 61-52.

Luke Jarboe led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points and 3 threes. Tayden Logsdon followed behind with 14 points on the night. 

DCHS 68, Meade Co. 51

Daviess County picked up a 68-51 win at home against Meade County to put them at 7-1 in regional play. 

DC came out of the gate strong as they quickly amassed a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter they extended their lead to a comfortable 37-20 before halftime. Meade began to push back in the third quarter with a 16-point effort, but the Panthers offense didn’t let up as they scored 20 in the quarter to extend their lead further. Despite Meade outsourcing them 15-11 in the final quarter, Daviess County closed out the win at 68-51. 

The Panthers had 5 of their players score in the double digits to contribute to the fluid offense. Jonathan Moss led the team with 15 points, and DeAaron Watkins and Ayden Ayer both followed behind with 14 points each. Gage Phelps scored 12 points on the night, and Jaxon Brown scored 11 as well.

Evansville Bosse 78, OHS 66

Owensboro’s trip to Indiana didn’t end in their favor as they were defeated by Evansville Bosse 78-66. The Red Devils also finished the game having made 21 out of 22 free throws as a team.

Neither team could secure a comfortable early lead as the first quarter ended 13-12 with OHS leading by 1-point. Owensboro struggled to contain Bosse in the second quarter as they outscored them 26-16 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 38-29 lead. OHS fought back in the third quarter with a 19-point effort to close the gap to 53-48. Owenbsoro’s offense had a final push of 18 points in the fourth, but Bosse put the nail in the coffin by outscoring them with 25 in the quarter to make the final score 78-66. 

Leading the Red Devils in scoring Keaton Hughes with a 23-point performance and 100% FT% shooting 9 of 9 from the line. Dayshawn Sanders followed behind with 19 points, 3 threes and shot 4 out of 4 on free throws. Michael Acton also shot 4 of 4 from the line as part of his 16 points on the night.
