Boys’ Basketball recap (Dec. 29):  AHS, DCHS, OHS, OCHS

Owensboro Catholic started the Southwire Holiday Classic with a win while Apollo, Daviess County and Owensboro closed out their respective tournaments.

Grayson Co. 73, AHS 65

Apollo lost their final game in the H&H Holiday Hoopfest to Grayson County 73-65. Apollo led the game early on with a 15-12 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles sustained their lead into halftime at 35-31. Grayson scored 19 points to Apollo’s 11 in the third quarter to secure a 4-point lead going into the final quarter. Apollo tried to claw their way back in front with 19 points in the 4th, but it wasn’t enough and they lost 73-65. 

The Eagles had four players score in double digits during the game. Leading the team was Eli Williams with 18 points as well as 3 three-pointers. Tate Powers scored all 15 of his points from his 5 three-pointers throughout the game. Landon Henning followed behind with 13 points on the night. Luke Jarboe had 10 points as well. 

DCHS 49, Portland,TN 44

Daviess County closed out the FB&T Classic with a 49-44 win over Portland, TN. DC had a 1-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Portland took the lead by halftime at 27–23 after scoring 14 points to the Panthers’ 9. DCHS came out in the third quarter and held Portland to just 7 points while they secured a small 39-34 lead going into the final quarter. DC held onto their lead to win 49-44. 

Leading the scoring for the Panthers was Gage Phelps with 18 points. Jonathan Moss had the next highest points with 14. 

OHS 74, Ballard Memorial 59

Owensboro has a comfortable 74-59 win over Ballard Memorial to close out the Henderson Chevrolet, Buick, GMC Classic. Both teams started out the game looking to gain the upper hand early as the first quarter ended 21-17 with Owensboro leading. Owensboro held their lead into halftime at 37-29. They increased their lead to 63-45 by the end of the third quarter by outsourcing Memorial 26-16. They closed out the game at 74-59. 

Leading the Red Devils in scoring was Dayshaun Sanders with 21 points along with 3 three-pointers. Will Hume had the next highest points with 13. Michael Acton scored 10 points during the game as well. 

OCHS 54, Christian Co. 47

Owensboro Catholic opened the Southwire Holiday Classic with a 54-47 win over Christian County. Catholic started out with a slight 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Aces held Christian to only 5 points in the second quarter to go into halftime leading 25-16. After being outscored 13-9 in the third quarter, Christian County mounted a final push in the final quarter by scoring 22 points to Catholic’s 16. It wasn’t to take the lead however, and Catholic left with the win 54-47. 

Leading in scoring for the Aces was Waryn Ebelhar and Luke Beickman with 12 points each. Solly Smith scored 10 points in the game as well.
