Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic are no strangers to the late stages of the bracket, and this year they once again face off in the quarterfinal round of their state tournaments. Owensboro will travel to Louisville in Atherton who have had a strong season. Owensboro Catholic will host Green County at Steele Stadium with hopes to preserve their playoff run and undefeated season.

Green County, 10-2 (Class 2A, District 3)
at Owensboro Catholic, 12-0 (Class 2A, District 2)

Highlights

Owensboro Catholic are still protecting that undefeated streak deep into the playoffs. They will play Green County who have only lost two matches so far this season, so offenses will be on full display. Catholic have had commanding offensive performances in their last two playoff games. Green County’s defense will have to put on a strong performance to slow the momentum Catholic quickly builds on offense.

Last Week
Green County: Won 36-28 against Metcalfe County
Owensboro Catholic: Won 29-7 against Crittenden County

Coach’s thoughts
Owensboro Catholic head coach Jason Morris:

We need to remain calm and execute like we have in every other game. We have experienced players who will be ready. Green County has good size and good skill to run the ball hard. Their quarterback manages games well.

Owensboro, 8-4 (Class 5A, District 1)
at Atherton, 11-1 (Class 5A, District 3)

Highlights

Owensboro comes into this round off a big win after they eliminated 2021 state champions South Warren. Atherton have only lost one game this season, that being the season opener, so Ownesboro will have to put on another great offensive performance. Defensively they will need to stay disciplined as Atherton have not allowed any points scored on them so far in the postseason.

Last week
Owensboro: Won 53-22 against South Warren
Atherton: Won 21-0 against Butler

Coach’s thoughts
Owensboro head coach Jay Fallin:

In the third round of the playoffs there are no bad teams left. We’ve got lots of experience playing in these games, but it’s been a while since we’ve been on the road for a game in this round. We will have to be prepared to play our best for 48 minutes. Like anything, experience is the key. Our kids know what’s at stake and what it takes. Their running back is very good. We will need to contain him and limit his ability to make explosive plays.
