Owensboro Catholic edged out a 1-0 win against Owensboro in a girls’ soccer district matchup on Wednesday at Shifely Park.
While the Lady Aces controlled possession through the first half, the Lady Devils’ defense was equally prepared to make the stop when needed.
The lone breakthrough of the night happened in the 17th minute when Ginny Young assisted Allie Marston, who dribbled through the back line before finding the net.
The remainder of the match was highlighted by multiple offensive opportunities by both teams. Although there were close moments, such as a shot from Mallary Bailey hitting the post, neither team could finish off their chances.
Despite the win, OCHS Head Coach Andy Hines said his team did not show up to play, saying the game highlighted the lack of leadership on the team.
“We’re lacking that leadership on the field, and the unity,” he said. “It’s always somebody else’s fault right now, and I think that’s shown in games like this. When teams kinda sit back deep and make it complicated, you got to play smart soccer, and we didn’t play very smart tonight.”
OHS played a defensive-oriented game while trying to capitalize on counterattacks, and Lady Devils’ goalkeeper Emma Wilkins had 17 saves. OHS Head Coach Sarah Poole said their mindset going into the match was to play defensively and applauded her team for sticking to the plan.
“We have struggled a little bit with following the plan when playing against very talented teams thus far this season,” she said. “Tonight they stuck with it and played hard.”
Both teams will be back on the field with 7 p.m. district home games on August 29. OCHS will face Apollo, while OHS will take on Daviess County.
