Mary Evelyn Wiman scored a hat trick to help Daviess County in a 7-0 victory over Apollo on Tuesday night. The Lady Panthers moved to 2-1 in district play, while the E-Gals drop to 1-2.
The first half of play was controlled by DCHS as they netted three goals early in the first half to set the tempo. Molly Floyd opened the scoring, followed by Wiman who scored two back-to-back goals for a 3-0 lead.
Wiman also contributed Daviess County’s aggression on offense in their tournament in the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg, TN the past weekend.
“We played really good competition in Gatlinburg this weekend,” she said. “I think we learned new things in regards to tackling harder, playing the ball to feet, finishing in general, and playing better as a team.”
The first half ended with an unlucky goal conceded by AHS. Molly Fuqua scored when her shot went through the goalkeeper’s legs, and the ball entered the goal during the struggle to clear it.
The beginning of the second half saw both teams get multiple opportunities in front of goal, but DCHS still held most of the possession. The first goal of the second half came when Bailey Brown was found open in the middle of the box. Brown passed the ball into the bottom corner to make the score 5-0.
Wiman then completed her hat trick by following a shot and scoring off the rebound to bring the score to 6-0. The final goal was the result of a threaded through pass from Kate McCain to Johanna Pedro Gaspar. Gaspar dribbled past the final defender and beat the goalkeeper to make the final score 7-0. McCain finished with two assists total, and Fuqua had an assist to go along with her goal.
AHS head coach Zach Akin said he did not feel that his team played to the level they were capable of, and they felt off since the starting whistle. The early lead by DCHS affected the team mentally as well, he said.
“Obviously, giving up two goals in the first 10 minutes is tough,” he said. “We kinda gave a little effort after the second goal, but when you go down 2-0 in 10 minutes it’s pretty tough to mentally switch back on after that. I’ll give credit to them; they played through us.”
