The Owensboro Bombers are looking to continue their hot streak in the postseason, aiming for a third state championship in a series against Lexington Post 8 kicking off on Thursday.
Owensboro had an impressive weekend at the semi-state tournament, defeating Post 68 Aces twice and Madisonville once. It was the team’s offense that stole the show in the tournament, scoring a combined 29 runs over three games.
“I was pleased with our offensive production,” Freeman said. “The kids have been working on situational hitting and being aggressive on fastballs in the strike zone early in the count. One thing we have to do better is getting bunts down to move runners. This is a facet of the game that is critical in postseason play.”
And while the offense was on fire, Freeman was more than pleased with his pitching staff that allowed one run during those three games. He went on to highlight recent performances from Noah Cook, Peyton Cary and Davey Hiner, while giving a nod to Grayson Smith for being a defensive force in the middle infield.
The Bombers will have a three-game series with Lexington Post 8 to decide the state champion, with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Owensboro’s definitely hot at the right time, and Freeman said that the team has a lot of confidence heading built up thanks to recent execution on the field and are looking forward to the challenge.
“This is their second trip to the championship and they will be confident coming into the three- game set,” Freeman said. “Our strategy is similar to what we have done the last seven weeks. We have to produce runs early in the game. Our pitching staff needs to get ahead of hitters by living on the edges of the plate. This will help keep pitch counts low. Defensively we have to limit errors.”
