Errors and late offense were the keys to success for Apollo on Monday, as it helped them grab four runs in the last two innings of play to defeat Owensboro 6-3 on the road.
The Lady Devils struck first, as a two-out single by junior Sophie Moorman led to an RBI double from senior K’Asia Palmer against her former team to take a 1-0 lead into the second. A pair of errors by Owensboro led to a run the very next inning though, with the E-gals taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth thanks to an error and a one-run single from freshman Taylor Clark.
A one-out walk helped the Lady Devils respond swiftly though, as a pair of two-out singles from Moorman and Palmer plated a run each to give them a 3-2 lead going into the sixth. But Apollo quickly bounced back in the top of the sixth, as a leadoff single and double from sophomores Abbie Butterworth and sophomore Abby Miles led to a two-run single from Clark and a 4-3 E-gals lead.
Apollo didn’t stop there though, getting one more in the inning on an RBI groundout from senior Morgan Julian and a solo home run from senior Morgan Frizzell in the top of the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. Owensboro battled back to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a one-out error and pair of singles, but senior Emmie Bullington was able to get a fly out to secure the 6-3 victory for the E-gals.
Bullington allowed two earned runs in the win, giving up eight hits and one walk while striking out six. Clark led the way at the plate with three RBIs, while Frizzell and Julian both had one each.
Apollo moves to 11-8 and 2-3 in district play with the win, as they look to take that momentum into their district regular season finale at Owensboro Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Palmer on the other hand took the loss in her start, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in the seven innings pitched. K’Asia led the way at the plate for the Lady Devils with a pair of RBIs, while Moorman chipped in one.
The Lady Devils fall to 7-16 overall and 0-5 in district play, as they will look to bounce back at home against Edmonson County at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
