Owensboro Catholic and Apollo baseball were firing on all cylinders Wednesday, topping Breckinridge County and Henderson County at home respectively.
Apollo vs Henderson County
The Eagles got a balanced effort in their final home game of the season, coming out on top against Henderson County 7-4 on Wednesday.
Apollo set the tone for the game early, getting back-to-back singles from senior Aiden Wells and senior Hayden Cash to set up an RBI single from sophomore Grayson Smith for the first run of the game. A bunt from senior Josh Mayes then turned into two more runs thanks to an error, with senior Cayden Crabtree getting an RBI single the following at-bat to make it a 4-0 game.
A sac bunt kept things rolling for the Eagles as well, with junior Easton Blandford delivering a two-run double to lead 6-0 going into the third. The Colonels peppered in four runs across the remainder of the game, but it wasn’t enough as Apollo’s early lead stood tall and eventually resulted in the 7-4 win.
Senior Noah Cook picked up the win in his start, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings pitched. Blandford pitched the last two innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks.
Blandford also led the way at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while Crabtree and Smith both had one each. Sitting at 19-11 overall following the win, Apollo will look to close out the regular season by extending their winning streak to three games against Bowling Green at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Owensboro Catholic vs Breckinridge County
Owensboro Catholic was on fire at the plate on Wednesday, snapping their five-game losing streak with an 8-2 win over Breckinridge County at home.
The Fighting Tigers had momentum on their side early on, grabbing the first run of the game and later leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the third. But from there the Aces offense never looked back, scoring two in the bottom of the third, one in the bottom of the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.
Owensboro Catholic’s pitching staff had the rest of the game under control as well, as freshman Barrett Evans didn’t allow a hit in the last two innings en route to the 8-2 victory.
Senior Thomas Eyre picked up the win in his three-inning start, allowing one earned run—two total—on three hits and two walks while striking out one. Junior Ben Hyland pitched two innings of relief as well, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk, while striking out one.
