The Red Devils were firing on all cylinders in a road win over Grayson County on Tuesday, while Trinity (Whitesville) won an all-out slugfest with Edmonson County and Daviess County struggled to muster up enough offense in a home loss to Castle.
Owensboro vs Grayson County
A strong start and strong finish offensively helped Owensboro grab its second straight win on Tuesday, defeating Grayson County on the road 9-4.
The Red Devils got on the board first in the contest, getting an RBI double from sophomore Cayden Ray in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Owensboro added onto their lead in the third, quickly loading the bases with one out and slowly turning it into a four-run inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Grayson County went on to get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning and in the bottom of the fifth, while the Red Devils grabbed four runs over the last two innings to secure the 9-4 win. Owensboro took advantage of three Grayson County errors and turned them into four runs on the day, while sophomore Brady Benjamin led the way with three RBIs and senior Connor Hallmark and sophomore Trevor DeLacey added one each.
DeLacey got the starting nod, allowing three earned runs on two hits and four walks while striking out five. Sophomore Will Hume followed with two innings or relief in which he gave up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four, while Benjamin pitched the ninth and closed the door on the win with one strikeout.
The Red Devils improve to 4-1 overall with the win, as they look to extend their winning streak to five straight when they take on Henderson County on the road at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Daviess County vs Castle
The Panthers struggled to find hits in Tuesday’s contest with Castle, striking out 13 times in a 9-1 loss at home.
Daviess County got off to a rocky start from the jump, as Castle scored four runs in the top of the first and three in the second to take an early 7-0 lead. Meanwhile, future Auburn Tiger Cameron Tilly had the Panthers number, allowing just one hit in the first four innings of the game while tallying 10 strikeouts.
Daviess County was able to collect two more hits and grab a run against Castle’s bullpen, but that would be all that the Panthers would get while Castle scored two more in the top of the sixth en route to the 9-1 win. Junior Lake Wilson struggled in his start, allowing seven earned on seven hits, while walking two, striking out six in four innings and being responsible for the team’s lone RBI.
The Panthers fall to 3-2 overall with their second straight loss, as they’ll look to turn things around in a home game against South Warren at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Trinity vs Edmonson County
The Raiders picked up a big district win on Tuesday, bouncing back from a loss to Edmonson County on Monday with a 16-12 win against them on the road this time around.
Trinity (Whitesville) looked to set the tone early, grabbing three runs in the first and never looking back. The Raiders kept chugging on offense throughout the game, with seniors Nate Hernandez and Gavin Howard leading the way at the plate with a pair of hits each on the day.
Head Coach Ethan Maxey also said that Howard was key for them in relief, keeping them in the game and getting ahead of hitters while sophomore Brady McBrayer closed out the 16-12 win. The Raiders improve to 3-5 overall with the win, as they will look to grab another road win on Thursday when they take on Apollo at 5:30 p.m.
