Apollo and Owensboro Catholic used its offense to find success on Saturday, while Owensboro and Trinity (Whitesville) suffered one-point losses on the road.

Owensboro vs McCracken County

Owensboro wasn’t able to slow down the Mustangs offense on Saturday, as senior Jack McCune hit a buzzer-beater to grab a 63-62 win at home and keep them undefeated at 14-0.

McCracken County had contributions from all over in the first half, but senior Kenyatta Carbon grabbed 17 points to help the Red Devils stay within reach at 32-28 at halftime. In the second half Carbon (15) and junior AP Mitchell (18) led the charge, combining for all but one of the team’s points.

The Mustangs were not to be deterred though, as McCune led them with 25 points—including the buzzer-beating bucket to secure the 63-62 win. Carbon led all scorers with 32, while Mitchell finished with all of his 18 points coming in the second half.

Owensboro falls to 10-5 overall with the loss, as they now have almost a week to prepare for a district showdown with Owensboro Catholic at home at 7 p.m. on Jan. 13.

Apollo vs Garrard County

Apollo took over the game in overtime, stifling Garrard County to foil their comeback attempt with a 67-56 win.

Despite Ethan Cooper tallying 11 of Garrard’s County’s 17 points in the third, Apollo was able to hang on to its 44-38 lead going into the fourth. But in the fourth the Eagles were held to single digits, leading to things being all tied up at 53-53 and forcing overtime.

In overtime it was all Apollo though, as they held Garrard County to one basket and a free throw. Meanwhile, freshman Kobe Kelly had six of the Eagles 14 points en route to the 67-56 win.

Senior Zjhan Tutt led the way with 23 points for Apollo, while Kelly had 19 and senior Jaxon Hardin had 11. The Eagles snap the two-game losing streak and sit at 2-11, looking to make it two in a row when they take on Hopkins County Central at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Owensboro Catholic vs Meade County

The Aces came out on top in an offensive showdown against Meade County on Saturday, grabbing an 83-65 win.

Owensboro Catholic didn’t get off to a great start, trailing 18-12 thanks to a combined 16 from Peyton Johnston (eight) and Garret Hardesty (eight) going into the second quarter.  The Aces bounced back in the second though, erupting for 22 points with the help of senior Brian Griffith’s 13 to help grab a 34-33 halftime lead.

Griffith and Owensboro Catholic didn’t slow down in the third either, as the senior guard grabbed 16 of the team’s 31 in the quarter to take a 65-44 lead. The Green Wave tried to climb back into the game with five threes in the fourth, but the Aces didn’t slow down and were able to seal the 83-65 win.

Griffith led all scorers with a whopping 36 points, while sophomore Luke Beickman added 13 and senior Parker Gray chipped in 11. Owensboro Catholic moves to 13-1 overall with the win, as they’ll look to make it six straight against Evansville Memorial at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs Breckinridge County

The Raiders couldn’t muster up enough offense on Saturday, as Breckinridge County got contributions from all over to come out with a narrow 49-48 win.

Trinity (Whitesville) was led by senior Nate Hernandez in the first half, as his five threes helped them trail 25-24 going into halftime—despite Brayden Carman grabbing 10 points to lead the Fighting Tigers. That one-point differential would end up being the Raiders demise though, as both teams grabbed 24 in the second half as Breckinridge County grabbed a 49-48 win.

Hernandez led the way with 22 points for Trinity, while senior Landon Huff was the only other player to score more than four points with 13 on the night. The Raiders fall to 7-5 with the loss, as they will now look ahead to Tuesday’s road matchup with Evansville Christian at 7:30 p.m.
