Holding off a late push from Edmonson County, Trinity (Whitesville) was able to secure its spot in the 3rd Region Tournament for the first time since 2009 with a 61-55 win.
Junior Landon Huff set the tone for the game in the first quarter, going for 13 points and hitting two of the Raiders four threes to take a 21-5 lead going into the second.
Getting eight points from Braden Wall in the second, the Wildcats came alive and scored 16 points in the quarter. Trinity’s offense faltered, but Huff chipped in six more points and sent them into halftime with a 33-21 lead.
Edmonson County continued to battle its way back into the game coming out of the locker room, holding the Raiders to single digits and registering 15 points in the third. Thanks to their efforts on both ends of the floor, the Wildcats had cut their deficit to 42-36 going into the fourth.
Edmonson County had its best offensive quarter of the night in the fourth, getting eight of its 19 points from Cole Saling. However, Trinity’s offense had found its rhythm once again.
The Raiders matched the Wildcats offensive output in the quarter, with six different players scoring en route to a 61-55 win and a spot in the 12th District Championship.
Huff led all scorers with 25 points on the night, while junior Nathan Hernandez tallied 13 points and junior Landon Smith registered 10 points.
They will have a few days off to prepare following the win, as they are set to compete in the 12th District Championship at 7 p.m. on Friday.
