The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball concluded its season opening trip at the Charger Chillout. The Panthers faced-off with two more top teams on Sunday, dropping the opener 5-4 in extras to Lincoln Memorial and 11-1 to No. 23 Alabama Huntsville.
The Panthers (1-5) did not waste time as they jumped on the Railspitters early. After a single and hit batter, Hannah Scheberle produced an RBI single into right. Calysta Crum followed with another single that scored Augusta Garr. A sacrifice fly later in the frame plated Scheberle.
Wesleyan added another run in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead and held a 4-1 lead through four innings. LMU got within one run after a two-run homerun in the fifth, but the Panthers marched into the final inning with a 4-3 lead. An error kept LMU alive as the scored the game-tying run.
The Panthers saw their hopes dashed with a play at the plate in the eighth. The Railsplitters played small ball and got the winning run across for the walk-off win. Sarah Linville recorded a three for four day with a double. Cameron Hamilton pitched a complete game, 7.1 innings, allowing five runs, three earned on 13 hits and three strikeouts.
The No. 23 Chargers scored four times in the bottom of the first of game two. Mikayla Benson drove-in a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to cut the UAH lead to 4-1. The Chargers answered with a run in the bottom half and added three more in the third and fourth innings.
The Panthers will travel to the greater Nashville area next week for series of games. The Music City Classic will begin on Friday with Lindenwood and Indianapolis.
