Putting on an absolute clinic offensively and defensively, the Red Devils remained undefeated in district play with a dominant 94-35 home victory over Apollo.
Owensboro wasted no time getting going offensively on Saturday, jumping out to a 15-2 lead in the first four minutes of play.
The Red Devils’ pressure defensively continued to turn into offense, as they went into the second owning a 29-6 lead.
The second quarter was much of the same, as Apollo had no answer for Owensboro on the defensive end. Despite grabbing 21 points in the quarter, the Eagles went into halftime trailing 61-25.
The second half was no different for Owensboro, as they continued to pour it on offensively while holding Apollo to just 10 points. This team effort on both ends of the floor helped the Red Devils walk away with a dominant 94-35 win.
Owensboro set the tone for the game with fullcourt pressure from the tip, as Drake said they continue to improve in that facet of the game.
“That’s the way we like to play and we’re getting better playing that way without fouling early too,” Drake said. “Our guys have finally figured out to just be in position and let them make the mistakes instead of forcing the mistakes. We’re getting better disciplined on defense.”
Their goal going into the game was to not let the Eagles get to the free throw line until the fourth. While Apollo was able to do so in the third, Drake was more than pleased with his team’s effort.
It was the usual duo of Amari Robinson-Wales and Kenyatta Carbon who led the charge offensively, leading the way with 24 and 27 points respectively.
“They’re getting better playing with each other too you know,” Drake said. “They kind of look for each other. It’s nothing selfish. When you’ve got two guys like that, that’s what you look for. If you want to win a ballgame, that’s what you try to do. Hats off to our guys too that they look for those guys too. They could be selfish as well, but they know where their bread is buttered and they know when those guys are getting off they get off.”
The Red Devils got everyone in on the action, as ten different players scored on the night en route to their fifth district win (5-0).
“It was fun,” Drake said. “Those guys put the work in in practice. A lot of games they don’t get in, but they got in tonight and they played well too, the ones that got in. It’s paid off for them.”
Sitting at 17-5 and undefeated in district play, Drake and Owensboro don’t want to get complacent and said they have to finish the season strong.
“Finish the deal is what we gotta do,” Drake said. “That’s our whole goal every year, to have an opportunity to play for a district championship and then the rest takes care of itself. We’re closing in on that right there and they’re getting better.”
With a five-game winning streak under their belt, the Red Devils will look to stay hot against Bowling Green at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Apollo on the other hand falls to 2-20 and 0-5 in district play and will hope to bounce back when they take on against Hancock County on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
