The Lady Devils struggled offensively in their loss to Butler County on Tuesday, while the Lady Raiders stayed hot and added another one to their winning streak against Hancock County.
Owensboro vs. Butler County
Playing without eighth grader Unique Carter-Swanagan, Owensboro’s first quarter struggles offensively ultimately came back to bite them in a 54-47 loss to the Lady Bears on Tuesday.
Only able to record two baskets in the first quarter, the Lady Devils were limited to single digits. Meanwhile, Butler County used a balanced attack offensively to take a 14-7 lead into the second.
Owensboro was able to make significant ground up in the second thanks to sophomore A’Lyrica Hughes, as she scored 10 of the team’s 14 points in the quarter. While she nearly outscored the Lady Bears herself, the Lady Devils went into halftime trailing 27-21.
Butler County bounced back coming out of the locker room, getting 10 of its 17 points from Gracie Cardwell in the third. Her efforts while just narrowly allowing Owensboro to crack double figures helped the Lady Bears go into the fourth owning a 44-32 lead.
The Lady Devils were able to hold Butler County to its weakest offensive quarter in the fourth with 10 points, but they were unable to muster up enough offense and lost to the Lady Bears 54-47.
Cardwell and Taylin Clark led Butler County with 16 points each, while Hughes led all scorers with 21 points and senior Chandler Worth also finished in double figures for Owensboro with 12 points.
The loss is the fifth straight for the Lady Devils, as they close out the regular season sitting at 13-15 and will take on Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the district tournament at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs. Hancock County
The Lady Hornets struggled in the second and third quarter offensively, as Trinity spoiled Bailey Poole’s game-high 23 points with a 50-46 home win.
Poole (eight) and Lily Roberts (seven) helped kickstart the Lady Hornets offense on Tuesday, scoring 15 of the team’s points en route to a 17-14 lead heading into the second.
Hancock County’s offensive prowess was nowhere to be found in the second quarter, as they were only able to knock down two baskets in the quarter. Meanwhile, the Lady Raiders used a balanced attack offensively to claim a 25-21 halftime lead.
Trinity’s offense faltered coming out of the locker room, as they were only able to register nine points in the third. However, the Lady Hornets did the same, as they were limited to two baskets once again and went into the fourth trailing 34-30.
In the fourth senior Cassidy Morris helped seal the deal for the Lady Raiders, as she notched seven of the team’s 16 points. While Poole tallied 12 points for Hancock County in the fourth, it was too little too late as they fell to Trinity 50-46.
Pool led all scorers with 23 points on the night, while Morris and junior Josie Aull led the Lady Raiders with 18 and 15 points respectively.
Trinity is on a roll with its fourth straight victory, as they sit at 12-10 overall going into its second to last game of the regular season against Daviess County at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
