First quarter struggles ultimately came back to bite Trinity (Whitesville) on Monday, as their comeback was thwarted in double overtime with a 62-58 win by Edmonson County.
It was a slow start for the Raiders in the first quarter, as they were limited to single digits and the Wildcats took an 11-7 lead. Trinity was able to bounce back and crack double digits in the second, but Edmonson County’s offense didn’t falter as their lead grew to 23-17 at halftime.
Junior Landon Huff caught fire coming out of the locker room with seven points in the third, but the Raiders still were unable to make up much ground and went into the fourth trailing 34-27.
In the fourth, Trinity’s offense came alive thanks to five threes from beyond the arc. Junior Nathan Hernandez nailed three of them accounting 11 of the team’s 22. Able to slow the Wildcats down to 15 points, the Raiders were able to give themselves another chance by forcing overtime.
Neither was able to get it done in the first overtime period, as both teams scored six points as the horns sounded for another quarter of basketball. It was there that Trinity was limited to three points, helping Edmonson County walk away with a 62-58 win.
Huff led the Raiders with 21 points on the night, while Hernandez followed closely behind with 18 points—with 12 of them coming from deep.
Trinity moves to 15-12 with the loss, as they will look to bounce back with their third straight home game against Hancock County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
