Trinity and Owensboro were able to grab wins in its respective matchups on Tuesday, while Daviess County’s losing streak was extended to four games.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs. Ohio County
Struggling to open up the first and second half hot, strong second and fourth quarters helped propel Trinity to a 57-55 win over Ohio County.
The Raiders were frazzled in the first quarter, as the Eagles intense pressure defensively was giving Trinity fits. The turnovers kept coming for the Raiders, as Ohio County took an 11-6 lead into the second.
The second quarter was a completely different story, as Trinity’s offense came alive and their 2-3 zone was practically impenetrable. The Raiders were able to limit the Eagles to just one point in the quarter, claiming the lead at 24-12 going into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room Ohio County was determined to fight its way back into the game, rattling off 20 points in the third. While limiting Trinity to single digits for the second time on the night, the Eagles had cut their deficit to 33-32 going into the fourth.
Juniors Landon Huff (10) and Nathan Hernandez (eight) went to work to secure the win for Trinity in the fourth, as they combined for 18 of the team’s 24 points.
Ohio County had a strong fourth as well with 23 points, but the hole they dug themselves in the second was too large and the Raiders walked away with the 57-55 win.
Hernandez led all scorers with 20 points on the night while also serving as a ball magnet on the defensive end with nine steals. Huff followed in his footsteps with 14 points, while junior Gavin Howard also had 11 points.
Trinity now sits at 11-10 on the season, as they will turn their attention to Edmonson County for the second time this year at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Daviess County vs Muhlenberg County
Being limited to single digits in the first and third quarter, Daviess County wasn’t able to muster up enough offense against Muhlenberg County and lost 64-45.
The Panthers had no answer for the Mustangs defense in the first, as sophomore Gage Phelps accounted for their lone basket. Meanwhile, Muhlenberg County surpassed the 20-point mark to take a 21-2 lead into the second.
Daviess County’s offense found some life in the second quarter, going for 21 points themselves to cut its deficit to 32-23 going into halftime. The Panthers offensive woes returned in the third quarter, as the Mustangs held them to four points and extended its lead to 53-27 going into the fourth.
Daviess County returned to form offensively in the fourth, while also holding Muhlenberg County to 11 points. Despite outscoring them for the second time in the game, it was too little too late as the Panthers fell to the Mustangs 64-45.
Phelps was the only player to finish in double figures for Daviess County, as the sophomore guard tallied 10 points on the night.
The Panthers losing streak sits at four straight, as they fall to 8-13 overall going into a tough district battle with Owensboro Catholic at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Owensboro vs. Breckinridge County
The Red Devils offense was flaming hot on Tuesday, outscoring Breckinridge County en route to a dominant 78-39 win at home.
Owensboro was hitting practically every open shot they looked at in the first, rattling off 26 points behind Amari Robinson-Wales (eight) and Kenyatta Carbon’s (six) combined 14 points.
Owning a 26-13 lead to open up the second quarter, the Red Devils stayed hot while limiting the Fighting Tigers to five points. Tallying 17 points in the quarter, Owensboro took a commanding 43-18 lead into halftime.
Breckinridge County was able to outscore the Red Devils in the third, but the Fighting Tigers were limited to single digits once again in the fourth and ultimately fell 78-39.
Robinson-Wales led all scorers with 17 points on the night, while Carbon had 16 points and junior Cayman Powell chipped in 10.
Owensboro’s winning streak now sits at four straight, as they advance to 16-5 overall heading into their second district matchup with Apollo at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.
