Bouncing back from some first quarter struggles, Trinity (Whitesville) put together a strong second half to complete a 50-49 comeback district win in a nailbiter against Grayson County.
The Raiders came out flat in the first quarter, as they were limited to six points and went into the second trailing 13-6. Trinity’s offense came alive in the second quarter, using a pair of threes to help them outscore the Cougars and cut its deficit to 24-21 at halftime.
The Raiders picked up right where they left off to open up the second half, as junior Landon Huff (eight points) and junior Nolan Mills (six points) combined for 14 of the team’s 22 points. Outscoring Grayson County for the second consecutive quarter, Trinity went into the fourth owning a 43-40 lead.
It was a defensive bout in the fourth quarter, with neither team able to crack double figures and taking the game down to the wire. Despite Grayson County narrowly passing the Raiders offensively, they were unable to make up for its defensive miscues in the third and fell 50-49.
Huff led all scorers with 14 points, as Mills finished close behind with 10 points as the only other player in double figures, with junior Gavin Howard registering nine points.
The come-from-behind win moves Trinity to 8-8 overall and will look to stay strong when they host Meade County at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
