The Lady Devils offense was stifled in Saturday’s loss, while Apollo and Trinity showed out on both ends of the court for wins in its respective matchups.
Owensboro vs. Henderson County
Playing without sophomore guard A’Lyrica Hughes, the Lady Devils struggled to find the bottom of the net as Henderson County defeated them 74-31.
The Lady Colonels got off to a roaring start in the first, scoring 21 points while limiting Owensboro to single digits and taking a 21-7 lead into the second.
The Lady Devils offense didn’t have much more success in the second quarter, as they were only able to muster up five points and went into halftime trailing 44-12.
Getting a combined eight points from eighth grader Unique Carter-Swanagan and sophomore Lizzy Phillips, Owensboro bounced back in the third with 11 points. However, they were held to single digits once again in the fourth, as Henderson County walked away with a 74-31 win.
No Lady Devils finished in double figures on the night, while Carter-Swanagan led the way with eight points and sophomores LuLu Greer and Trinity Hogg finished with five points each.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Owensboro as they fall to 12-9 overall. After two postponements the Lady Devils are set for a district battle in their next matchup, taking on Owensboro Catholic at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Apollo vs. Christian County
Playing without sophomore Jenna Dant, the E-gals senior backcourt duo in Amaya Curry and Shelbie Beatty led the charge en route to a 50-36 win over Christian County.
Apollo got off to a slow start in the first quarter of play, as they were limited to single digits and went into the second trailing 11-9. Beatty and Curry helped flip the switch in the second, as they both had seven points each to combine for 14 of the E-gals 18.
Defensively Apollo was clicking on all cylinders as well, limiting the Lady Colonels to just two points and went into halftime owning a 27-13 lead.
The E-gals offense faltered coming out of the locker room in the second half, as they were only able to score five points. Meanwhile, Christian County was able to cut its deficit to single digits, going into the fourth trailing 32-23.
It was a little deja vu in the fourth quarter for Apollo, as Curry and Beatty both had seven points each once again for 14 of the team’s 18 points. Their play helped the E-gals put the finishing touches on a 50-36 win over the Lady Colonels.
Beatty led the way with 20 points on the day and Curry followed closely behind with 17 points, while both recorded a pair of steals each.
The win moves Apollo to 11-10 overall on the season, as they will take a few days off before they are set to take on Hancock County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Trinity vs. Cloverport
Putting on a defensive showcase, the Lady Raiders were able to grab a 49-6 blowout victory over Cloverport on Saturday morning in front of their home crowd.
Trinity wasted no time getting right to work in the opening quarter, as they rattled off 16 points while holding the Lady Aces to zero points heading into the second.
The Lady Raiders didn’t have a strong second quarter offensively, barely cracking double digits. However, their defense never swayed, as they limited Cloverport to three points and took a commanding 26-3 lead into halftime.
The second half was much of the same for both teams, as Trinity held the Lady Aces to three points in the third and fourth combined. Add this on to a consistent offensive attack from the Lady Raiders, and they walked away with a 49-6 win.
Senior Cassidy Morris was the only player for Trinity in double figures, as she finished with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds.
The Lady Raiders advance to 8-7 with the win, as they will look to get revenge in their next matchup when they take on Butler County for the second time in four days at 6 p.m. on Monday.
