The Panthers offense struggled en route to a home loss on Saturday, while Trinity (Whitesville) shot the lights out in a bounce-back victory over Cloverport.
Daviess County vs. Warren East
Unable to get much offense outside of seniors Max Dees and Devonte McCampbell, a monster second quarter from Warren East led to the demise of the Panthers in a 65-54 home loss.
It was a slow start for both teams, as physical play led to numerous tough looks and turnovers. But the Raiders had the slight edge, taking a 13-12 lead after the first.
In the second quarter Warren East’s offense came alive, making its mark by connecting from beyond the arc five times. McCampbell (seven) and Dees (four) were leading the charge on the other side by combining for 11 of the Panthers points, but the Raiders’ marksmanship helped them take a 34-28 lead at halftime.
Dees continued to find the bottom of the net in the third to lead Daviess County offensively. He was responsible for nine of the Panthers’ 11 points, but they still trailed 47-39 going into the fourth.
Daviess County’s luck didn’t change in the fourth quarter, as junior Isaiah Andrews poured in 12 of his 25 points to lead Warren East to a 65-54 win.
Dees led the Panthers with 21 points on the night, while McCampbell followed closely behind with 19 points. Daviess County shot 36% to the Raiders 69% from the field on the evening.
The loss is the third straight for Daviess County, as they fall to 8-12 overall. The Panthers have a few days off to recoup, as they are set to take on Muhlenberg County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Trinity vs. Cloverport
An impressive display from beyond the arc that included 12 threes was a key factor in a dominant 79-54 home win for Trinity over Cloverport on Saturday.
Getting 12 points from deep in the first quarter, Trinity got off to a strong start and took an 18-12 lead into the second quarter. The Raiders offensive momentum continued in the second, with junior Gavin Howard leading the charge.
The junior guard accounted for 10 of the team’s 22 points, as they were able to expand their lead to 40-30 going into halftime. Lighting it up from three with four more treys in the third quarter, the Raiders defense limited the Aces to 10 points and went into the fourth with a commanding 60-40 lead.
Cloverport was able to bounce back with 14 points in the fourth, but its inability to stifle Trinity led to a 79-54 Raiders win.
Howard led all scorers with 21 points on the night, while junior Nathan Hernandez finished with 15 points and senior Bailey Wright finished with 13. Howard and Hernandez combined for eight of the Trinity’s 12 threes, finishing with four each.
The win moves the Raiders to 10-9 overall, as they will look to grab back-to-back home wins after a matchup with Butler County at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
