Apollo and Owensboro Catholic volleyball struggled on Saturday, falling in their respective doubleheaders this weekend.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Bowling Green & Logan County
The Lady Aces got off to a rocky start on Saturday, battling with Bowling Green but falling in three sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-17).
Owensboro Catholic looked to grab the first set to earn some early momentum, but Bowling Green had other ideas and won 25-20.
Bowling Green carried its momentum into the second set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 win.
The Lady Aces fought to stay alive in the third set, but they were unable to halt Bowling Green’s offense and fell 25-17.
Owensboro Catholic nearly forced a fifth set against Logan County, but was unable to stifle their scoring and fell in four sets.
The Lady Aces struggles carried over from their previous match, as Logan County came away with a 25-17 win in the opening set.
Owensboro Catholic quickly had its backs against the wall after suffering a similar defeat in the second set, losing 25-18.
However, the Lady Aces came alive in the third set with a solid performance to grab a 25-21 win over Logan County.
Owensboro Catholic traded points back and forth with Logan County in the fourth set, but it was too little too late as they lost 25-19 to fall in the match 3-1.
Senior Cate Sights led the way offensively the Lady Aces, recording 26 kills total in the two matches. Senior Hadley Latham also helped out on the day, recording 10 kills.
Sophomore Kennedy Murphy and junior Paige Miles helped set up their teammates per usual, recording 30 and 22 assists respectively.
Junior Emily Christian led the way defensively on the day, combining for 28 digs in the two matches. Murphy also chipped in 15 digs while sophomore Blair Riney followed right behind her with 14.
Owensboro Catholic now sits at 21-9 on the season overall and will look to close out the final week of the season strong, starting with a game against Webster County at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
Apollo vs. Breckinridge County
The E-gals were unable to find an answer against Breckenridge County, grabbing one set win in two matches (25-22, 25-19) (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21).
Apollo went toe-to-toe with Breckinridge County in the first set but fell just short, trailing in the match after a 25-22 loss.
The E-gals fought to stay alive and force a third set in the opening match, but were unable to quiet Breckenridge County’s offense and lost 25-19.
The next match Apollo came out determined for a different result, grabbing the opening set by a score of 25-22.
However, Breckinridge County responded to knot things up at 1-1 in the match by grabbing the second set 25-21.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading points, but Breckenridge County had the edge and ultimately came out on top 25-23.
With momentum not on its side, the E-gals were unable to muster up enough offense and fell 25-21 to lose the match 3-1.
Senior Havanah John led the way offensively for Apollo by recording 21 kills, while senior Maddi Boswell followed closely behind with 15 kills.
Sophomore Ahalia Ramirez was the usual suspect setting up the offense all day, recording 52 assists in the two matches.
It was a trio of E-gals leading the way defensively, as senior Abby Spong (21), sophomore Kaley Dickinson (16) and sophomore Kelsey Dickinson (11) combined for 48 digs.
Apollo now sits at 13-16 overall and will look to bounce back when they take on Daviess County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
