Volleyball recap (Oct. 15): AHS, DCHS, OHS, THS

Local volleyball was on fire Thursday night, as Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro and Trinity (Whitesville) all grabbed wins.

Apollo vs. Warren East

Apollo volleyball quickly took care of business on Thursday, earning a two-game sweep against Warren East (25-21, 25-23).

The E-gals came out and set the tone for the match in the opening set, grabbing a 25-21 win to take a 1-0 lead.

Warren East was determined to force a third set, battling back and forth with Apollo. However, the E-gals had the edge and grabbed a 25-23 second-set win to secure the match in their regular season road finale.

Senior Havanah Johns led the way offensively with 10 kills on the night, while sophomore Ahalia Ramirez set up the offense on multiple occasions with 12 assists.

It was a balanced effort for Apollo defensively, as sophomore Kelsey Dickinson (9), sophomore Kaley Dickinson (7), senior Abby Spong (7) and senior Courtney Hagan (5) combined for the team’s 28 digs.

Sitting at 14-19 overall the E-gals have two games left in the regular season, taking on Madisonville-North Hopkins at 9 a.m. and Meade County at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Daviess County vs. Hancock County

The Lady Panthers closed out the regular season with a strong performance against Hancock County, earning a three-set sweep at home (25-16, 25-6, 25-23).

Daviess County was strong from the opening set, putting together a strong performance to earn a 25-16 win.

Looking to take complete control of the match, the Lady Panthers were dominant and held Hancock County to single digits with a 25-6 win.

Hancock County traded points back and forth with Daviess County in the third set, but the Lady Panthers held them off for a 25-23 win to claim the match 3-0.

Daviess County had a plethora of contributors offensively, as junior Adylan Ayer (12), junior  Josie Newcom (11), junior Mary Grace Hill (8) and junior Sydney DeRossitt (6) combined for 37 of the team’s 40 kills.

It was no surprise that junior Lexi Owen was setting the offense up for success all night, finishing with a game-high 29 assists.

A number of players got in on the action defensively, as senior Kayla Clark (9), senior Avasia Brandle (7), Newcom (7) and Owens (6) combined for 29 of the team’s 47 digs.

The win moves the Lady Panthers to 17-9 overall, finishing the regular season with a region record of 11-1 and district record of 5-1.

Owensboro vs. Muhlenberg County

The Lady Devils closed out the regular season on a high note, defeating Muhlenberg County in three sets (25-7, 25-10, 25-18).

Owensboro asserted its dominance in the first set, grabbing a double-digit win by a score of 25-7 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Lady Devils stayed hot in the second set, earning another double-digit win at 25-10 in order to pull momentum completely on their side.

Muhlenberg County showed signs of life in the third set, but Owensboro stayed strong and won 25-18 to secure the 3-0 match win.

It was a trio of Lady Devils leading the way offensively, as freshman Maya Joska (9), freshman Addie Travis (7) and sophomore Chase Mather (7) combined for 23 of the team’s 31 kills.

Joska also led the way in assists with 12, while freshman Ava Fincher and junior Mia Covington finished with eight and six assists respectively to be responsible for all 26 of the team’s assists.

Sophomore Hannah Ashely led the way defensively with seven digs, while all but two players recorded at least one dig on the night.

Owensboro sits at 20-13 overall to close out the regular season, while owning a region record of 13-6 and district record of 3-3.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs. Union County

The Lady Raiders continued their winning ways on Thursday, extending their winning streak to 11 games against Union County (25-12, 25-11, 25-11).

Trinity was on fire from the jump, defeating Union County by double figures in the opening set by a score of 25-12.

Looking to take control of the match Trinity handed Union County a similar defeat in the second set, going up 2-0 with a 25-11 win.

The Lady Raiders couldn’t be stopped in the third set, defeating Union County 25-11 again to secure the 3-0 sweep.

Senior Cassidy Morris led the way offensively with 11 kills, while sophomores Hannah Nash and Georgia Howard finished with eight and seven kills respectively. Howard also chipped 10 serving aces on the night.

Junior Josie Aull was her usual self, setting up the offense all night with a game-high 30 assists. Meanwhile, Howard led the team defensively with five digs on top of her strong offensive performance.

The Lady Raiders sit a 23-4 overall and will look to extend its winning streak to 12 games when they host Owensboro Catholic at noon on Saturday.
