Owensboro Catholic stayed undefeated in district play, defeating Butler County in front of its home crowd 48-12.
It took two drives for the Aces to crack the scoreboard in this one, as a three-yard run from sophomore William Carico made it 7-0 with 5:59 left in the first quarter.
Owensboro Catholic then went on a tear, scoring three touchdowns in about two minutes with a little help from their defense.
Sophomore Hunter Monroe started the scoring frenzy with a four-yard run to make it 14-0 with 41.7 left in the first quarter.
After a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff, Mundy was the recipient of a screen pass for a 12-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 with 21.7 left in the first quarter.
The Aces forced another fumble as the first quarter came to a close and capitalized on the defensive triumph to start the second quarter.
Carico earned another rushing touchdown, this time taking it two yards to give them a 27-0 lead after the missed extra point with 11:30 left in the second quarter.
Butler County finally scored minutes later to make it 27-6 after a missed two-point conversion, but Owensboro Catholic responded swiftly.
Seconds later Mundy got another screen pass and took this one 65 yards to the house. The following play, a bad snap on the extra point turned into a two-point conversion for the Aces, making it 35-6 with 7:53 left in the first half.
Following an interception, Butler County was able to find the endzone again. They missed the two-point conversion, but cut its deficit to 35-12 going into the locker room.
The Aces got back on the board after a fumble recovery in the third quarter, as Clancy found Carico for a 12-yard touchdown to make it 42-12 with seven minutes to play in the quarter.
From then on the game went stagnant, as a frenzy of flags plagued both teams. It wasn’t until there was four minutes left in the game that the Aces found the endzone again, as Clark scored to make it a 48-12 game after the missed extra point.
Despite its best efforts, Butler County was outmatched by Owensboro Catholic and fell in the road matchup 48-12.
Aces Head Coach Jason Morris said he was pleased with his team’s play, but knows that they could’ve closed the game out sooner and stronger.
“I was proud of the way we came out and got on top and got up by four scores and it looked like we were gonna get a running clock,” Morris said. “Then I’m not proud of the fact that we didn’t go ahead and put them away. It’s something we gotta work on.”
Morris said he was pleased to get their running game going a little, but knows that having fumbled multiple times and throwing a few picks they have to eliminate turnovers going forward.
Defensively they made up for their turnovers on the night, as the Aces forced a plethora of fumbles themselves.
“We’ve been doing that all year,” Morris said. “We’ve got some guys who have good ball instincts, that’s what I call it. They’re really good at securing that tackle first and then getting in there and ripping it out. It’s something that we work on in practice and I’m proud that our kids are taking it over to the game.”
Owensboro Catholic is thriving as the season is progressing, after a rough five-game stretch to start the year. Sitting in the driver’s seat for district play, Morris said the main focus is on being in peak form for the postseason in general and not just within the district.
“With us we’re just trying to treat every game the same,” Morris said. “We wanna make sure we take care of business in two weeks, get healed up next week and take care of business in two weeks against McLean County and be ready for the playoffs.”
The Aces will look to improve their winning streak to four games when they return to the gridiron at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, against McLean County.
