Owensboro Catholic and Apollo volleyball both grabbed wins on Thursday night, but Owensboro and Daviess County lost their respective matchups.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Hancock County
The Lady Aces had a dominant performance against Hancock County, sweeping them in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-14)
Hancock County fought hard to come away victorious in the first set, but fell 25-17. Once Owensboro Catholic won the first set, they had all the momentum and used it to win the next two sets by double digits.
Owensboro Catholic came through with a balanced attack against the Lady Hornets, as senior Cate Sights (9), junior Abby Baughman (6) and freshman Olivia Castien (6) led the way by combining for 21 kills.
Junior Paige Miles and sophomore Kennedy Murphy led the offense with their passing, finishing with 17 and 10 assists respectively.
Murphy also helped out defensively by finishing with seven digs, while junior Emily Christian led the way with eight. Baughman also held her own defensively, recording six blocks to lead the team on the frontline.
Owensboro Catholic improves to 2-2 overall on the season and will return home to host Owensboro at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Apollo vs. Henderson County
After losing the first set, Apollo bounced back to win three straight sets to snap its three-game winning streak (25-18, 25-17, 25-19).
It was Henderson County that came out and set the tone in the first, taking it 25-18. However, the E-gals quickly answered and evened things up at 1-1 with a 25-18 second-set win.
Apollo then carried that momentum into the next two sets, defeating the Colonels 25-17 and 25-19 to take the match.
Senior Havanah John led Apollo offensively with 15 kills, while also tallying three blocks on the night. It was sophomore Ahalia Ramirez who helped set John up for a lot of those kills, recording 24 assists.
Senior Abby Spong once again proved herself to be a key defensive player for the E-gals as well, leading the team with 16 digs.
The win moves Apollo to 5-5 overall before they will return home to host a Trinity (Whitesville) team that is on a seven-game winning streak at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Owensboro vs. Breckinridge County
Owensboro had its two-game winning streak snapped on Thursday, falling to Breckinridge County in four sets despite a late comeback effort (24-26, 25-15, 25-14, 26-24)
Owensboro and the Lady Tigers battled point-for-point in the opening set, with the Lady Devils squeaking out a 26-24 win.
While they may have fallen in the opening set, Breckinridge County quickly shifted momentum, winning the second set 25-15.
The Lady Tigers won the third set 25-14 and it seemed like they were going to smoothly walk away with the win, but Owensboro was prepared to make them earn it.
It took an extra point for Breckinridge County to come away with the final set, narrowly defeating Owensboro 26-24.
The Lady Devils struggle to earn kills on the night, with no player registering more than seven kills on the night.
Junior Kennedy Thompson had a solid night defensively, leading the team with 25 kills, while sophomore Chase Mather was the only other player with double-digit digs with 12.
Owensboro now sits at 7-3 overall and has a quick turnaround, as they are set to compete in the Jerry Mezur Spikefest Friday and Saturday.
Daviess County vs. Greenwood
Daviess County suffered a tough road loss, being swept in three sets by Greenwood (25-15, 25-17, 25-21).
Greenwood limited the dynamic duo in Josie Newcom and Adylan Ayer, holding them to just 11 combined kills.
However, Ayer did serve as a solid defender in the front line, recording four blocks.
Lexi Owen led the Lady Panthers in assists per usual, recording 13.
Despite the result, Head Coach Tyla Bailey was pleased with their effort in the third set and said that Ayer played aggressive with a high level of energy.
Daviess County now has a week off before they are set to take on Henderson County at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9.
