Owensboro turned defense into offense to put away Ohio County, taking a 27-0 lead before taking a single offensive snap en route to a 55-7 victory on the road.

After a stop defensively, senior Maurice Moorman took the first punt of the game 57 yards for a touchdown to give the Red Devils a 7-0 lead with 10:30 left in the first quarter.

From there on, Owensboro never looked back and put the pressure on Ohio County with its defense.

Less than a minute later senior Tramel Barksdale recovered a fumble in the endzone to make it a 14-0 game with 9:36 left in the first quarter.

Another minute passed and the defense created havoc again, as junior Zach Clark had a 20-yard pick-six to make it 20-0 after the extra point was no good.

Barksdale got in on the action defensively again on the next drive for Ohio County, earning a scoop and score from the 12 to give Owensboro a 27-0 lead with 7:43 left in the first quarter.

The Red Devils continued to pile it on, this time doing so on their first offensive drive of the game.

Senior Javius Taylor did the damage, dashing through the defense for a 26-yard rushing touchdown to make it 34-0 with 4:40 to go in the first quarter.

The offense continued chugging before halftime, as a short touchdown pass from junior quarterback Kasey Boone to junior Jeremiah Goodwin and a rushing touchdown from freshman Deion Winstead made it 48-0 going into the locker room.

In the second half freshman Trevor Delancey checked in for Boone and grabbed a one-yard rushing touchdown for Owensboro’s lone score of the second half.

Ohio County finally got on the board late in the third quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome its deficit and fell to Owensboro 55-7.

The Red Devils had a 27-0 lead in the game before their offense ever took the field, something Head Coach Jay Fallin has scarcely seen.

“We were opportunistic early in defense and special teams and we made the plays we had to make,” Fallin said. “I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered that exact situation before, but I was pleased with our focus and our concentration through the first half with our varsity guys.”

Offensively they still had a strong game, getting a number of receivers involved while still excelling on the ground for total yardage of 213.

Boone finished with 76 yards on 7-8 passing with a touchdown, while Delacey finished with 44 yards on 2-7 passing and a rushing touchdown.

Taylor led the running game with 50 yards on four carries to go along with his lone touchdown, while Goodwin led all receivers with four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.

With a five-game winning streak under its belt, Owensboro now will look to fine tune some things in practice going into next week.

“It’s going to be another situation where we have to focus on us,” Fallin said. “We have to focus on all the little mistakes we’ve made that we have to continue to clean up. [We have to] get healthy… We have to focus on day-to-day improvement next week.”

The Red Devils will look to stay hot when they return home next week and host Muhlenberg County at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.
