Daviess County is gearing up for its road trip to take on Meade County in the season opener on Friday.
Head Coach Matt Brannon said that the team has been reflecting on their scrimmages and focused on getting healthy as the 2021 season is set to begin.
“Our focus this week has been correcting the mistakes that we made against Greenwood in the last scrimmage,” Brannon said. “We have also had some key players out, so it was good to get back into rhythm with the guys that have been our starters all summer.”
Brannon and company expect to execute at a high level, play tough physical defense, protect the ball, and get off to a good start with a big win. In order to do that they will be tasked with dealing with a strong team in Meade County.
“Meade County is always big and physical,” Brannon said. “They have transitioned to a spread offense, which is something new for them. Fortunately for us, we see this type of offense every day. We were hoping to get challenged with a tough physical run offense but we will make adjustments. Coach Mofield has been with the program for a long time, so we know they will be well coached. Should be a good match up of two quality 6A programs.”
In dealing with a team that is so physical, protecting the ball is key and Brannon said that if they limit mistakes they can come away victorious.
“The key for us to win the game is to protect the football, no turnovers, play solid special teams, and stop the run,” Brannon said. “If we can do this all year then we have a chance to win every game we play.”
Brannon said if they can grab the season opener with an impressive performance, they can start the year on a good note and keep rolling.
“We want to see big plays out of our offense and tough physical tackling by our defense,” Brannon said. “We can really set the tone for the season this Friday if we come out and play well.”
