Daviess County volleyball hit the road for its season opener, defeating Trinity 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20) to grab its first win of the 2021 campaign.
The Panthers were able to grab the first set 25-22, setting the tone for the match. Trinity bounced back in the second set, using high intensity to narrowly win 24-26.
“Trinity consistently played their game, executed, and kept high energy,” Daviess County Head Coach Tyla Bailey said.
Daviess proceeded to flip a switch following the lost set, grabbing the third and fourth set with ease.
Overall Bailey said that there are highs and lows on the night, but she was pleased with the team’s play to earn a good win.
“We did a nice job setting tempos and running plays in transition,” Bailey said. “We have a lot of things to fine tune, but our serving definitely needs to improve.”
A number of upperclassmen showed out for the Panthers in the win, with Lexi Owen leading the way.
“Lexi Owen was aggressive on the net tonight and led us in blocks, as well as assists,” Bailey said. “Josie Newcom and Adylan Ayer lead us in kills. Molly Oborski did an awesome job playing defense while in the back row. Mary-Grayce Hill had a solid night on serve receive and pick ups. Kaylee Garrison stepped in when called upon and did an outstanding job.”
Having dealt with COVID prior to the season starting, Daviess County is thrilled to start the season 1-0 and looks to continually improve as the season progresses.
“After coming out of quarantine and not being able to scrimmage, it felt great being on the court again and seeing exactly what we need to work on moving forward,” Bailey said. “It wasn’t our best performance, but we got the job done and will continue getting better.”
Daviess County will return to action Thursday when they take on South Warren at 7:30 p.m., while Trinity will look to grab its first win of the season against McLean County at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
